What is the Message?
So in a series of conversations over the past week with people on every side of the industry, the main common theme has been "ambassadors" and the "presentation" phenomenon.
Now in the interest of full disclosure, in my "other life" working behind the scenes for a few different brands I do find myself negotiating to get ambassador partnerships and watch presentations set up. But more and more the question that many people in the watch media (myself included) keep finding ourselves asking is - what's the connection?
In some instances it is very easy - OMEGA and astronauts/the space program.
In others, it just really seems to be an almost random connection. And if I am really, really honest, I personally don't give a baker's &^$! which watch a rock star, NBA star, hollywood actor is wearing on the red carpet. You give someone a watch, most likely they'll wear it - for the photo op. But in all honesty, what does that really gain the brand? And then (at least for me) what happens to the watch next? Is it actually worn by the celebrity? JLC gave "Don Draper" a Reverso - yet you would never see or hear much about it again. Bovet presented him with a watch for winning their celebrity Domino event - and yet I don't see him wearing that one either.
Think I'm being too critical? Maybe so, but riddle me this - a brand seems to be more interested in this type of publicity rather than to use it to help promote their charity? In all fairness, OMEGA and Girard-Perregaux (to name two) do put some of their PR money in this direction. Now perhaps I am just too idealistic, perhaps I don't live in the real world. But I do think that when we are talking about watch brands that have several hundred thousand dollars to really flush down the PR toilet on one-off "grin and grip" photo ops, I honestly think that they could afford $10,000 to spend on a REAL charity - unless maybe there is one for Mad Men stars watch funds ; )
Just a thought.

Wrapping Up the Bell & Ross Officer's Chronograph
Well once again, I've gone into extra time. The nice people at Bell & Ross have not sent out large men with large sticks to collect it. But all good things must come to an end, and before the Officer's Chronograph makes its way back to its home base.

Safe and Secure - 15 Days with the Officer's Chronograph
A watch is truly the sum of many smaller things coming together.
The Bell & Ross Officer's Chronograph is a beautiful, highly functional chronograph. But the true strength of this watch can be found in its many details. The clasp is well designed and executed. A butterfly clasp that is smoothly finished and comfortable on the wrist. Far too many deployment clasps are bulky, sharp-edged and really make the watch very uncomfortable to wear. But the clasp of the Bell & Ross has been a true pleasure.
The leather strap is very, very comfortable and ideally matched to the watch and clasp.
The finish work is very, very good with smoothly finished stitching. First class!
Far too often a watch fails on the strap and/or clasp. But in this instance Bell & Ross have done the business!
And now that we are approaching the end of our time together, I will update you that the timekeeping has remained bang on.
One more day to go - stay tuned!

"Truth" in Advertising
So today brought the Sunday New York Times. And as I read through a very interesting article on the newly, soon to be appointed Chief Executive at Burbery, I stumbled across the latest "factoid" from Shinola:
"SOMEDAY THEY'LL CALL GENEVA THE DETROIT OF SWITZERLAND"
So here's an open request to Shinola -
Please quit all the bullshit, make some watches that are more than the magic pixie dust that you are sprinkling through your advertising, and for God's sake - STOP hyping a preexisting quartz movement as a "made in Motown miracle". Honestly, I'm begging you, spend some real money not just on your advertising, but spend some on some actual long-term and more in-depth training and development of your employees to become true watch makers. Please understand, this is not a "quartz bad" commentary. There is NOTHING wrong with quartz - but quit presenting this as if is is some artisan's breakthrough that will put all of Switzerland on notice!
To quote my great grandfather, you've been drinking too much of your own bathwater. Let other people tell us about how great you are, it will lend a bit more credibility, and will not have the same whiff of "shinola".

Marine Chronometer Manufacture
This in from Ulysse Nardin -
Ulysse Nardin defies time by extending its iconic collection of marine watches
with a timepiece powered by Caliber UN-118, a technological gem.
In the 19th century, to protect its marine chronometers from the corrosive effect of the salty sea air and to overcome the technical challenges of a floor in constant motion, Ulysse Nardin decided to invest in time. The treasures of audacity and ingenuity it deployed have endured over the centuries. Today, Ulysse Nardin Manufacture not only pays homage to this spirit of innovation and independence that prevailed over its creation, but celebrates it with pride, perpetuating the legend. And so, the new Marine Chronometer Manufacture is the latest addition to the Ulysse Nardin collection of marine watches. Its Caliber UN-118, manufactured entirely in-house with its beating heart of silicon and DIAMonSIL, reminds us that traditional know-how and confident inventiveness reflects the ideology of Ulysse Nardin: to ensure its creations have the touch of eternity they deserve.
The cornerstone in the brand’s development and the key to its independence, this self-winding caliber is a real technological gem, and offers hours, minutes and direct-drive small seconds, a power reserve indicator at 12 o'clock and the date at 6 o'clock. Able to run autonomously for 60 hours, the Marine Chronometer Manufacture has a date that can be adjusted either backward or forward, and it also benefits from the Ulysse Nardin Certificate. Based on COSC tests of the performance of the movement alone, the Ulysse Nardin Certificate goes further by rigorously checking the quality and craftsmanship of the watch as a whole.

Available in 18 ct. rose gold or in stainless steel, the Marine Chronometer Manufacture bears the classic hallmarks of marine instruments: a generous case with a 43 mm diameter for excellent readability, a fluted bezel, solid lugs to ensure excellent stability on the wrist and a screw-locked crown guaranteeing complete water resistance to a depth of 100 meters, as well as a rubber finish for perfect handling. Displaying Arabic numerals, the dial is available in a choice of black, blue or silver. The timepiece comes mounted on either an alligator or rubber strap, or an 18 ct. gold, stainless steel bracelet.

JEANRICHARD Congratulates Nik Wallenda on NASCAR walk

JEANRICHARD congratulates
Nik Wallenda for making a high-wire walk at the pre-race
entertainment at NASCAR’s Bank of America 500 this past Saturday at the
Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina.
This walk pushed the limits by inviting his sister Lijana to walk on the wire with him for a spectacular and very challenging dual skywalk. This was the second year in a row Wallenda walked in the pre-race entertainment at the Charlotte Motor Speedway following last year’s walk over the grandstand to a tower near victory lane. It is also the second time Nik has walked while wearing his JEANRICHARD Terrascope. The Charlotte Motor Speedway has a reputation for spectacular pre-race entertainment that in the past has featured battle reenactments and a three-ring circus amongst other performances. Nik Wallenda’s daring high-wire walk fit perfectly with the breathtaking performances of past pre-race events.
“I was very excited to return to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the second year in a row,” said Wallenda. “I love the challenge of raising the bar to keep the fans on the edge of their seats and it was even more special this time having my sister join me on the wire.”
“We admire Nik and his personal values and how he lives his passion and pursues his dreams. He is an extraordinary man and has accomplished wonders”, said Bruno Grande, COO of JEANRICHARD.
In the same way that Wallenda enjoys the challenge of walking on a wire, JEANRICHARD creates watches for those who enjoy authenticity. The timepieces are made for independent spirits who play by their own rules, and rather than just focusing on the destination, prefer to enjoy the road being traveled.

OMEGA celebrated its retail expansion into Chile on Wednesday when media and guests joined supermodel and long-time brand ambassador Cindy Crawford at a press conference near the boutique in Parque Arauco.
Following the press conference, OMEGA hosted an event at the Quinta Normal Park site of The Santiago Museum of Contemporary Art. Guests from all over Latin America enjoyed a unique contemporary dance piece before browsing the selection of brilliant OMEGA Constellation Luxury Edition timepieces on display.

Raynald Aeschlimann, OMEGA’s Vice President and International Director of Sales, Retail and Distribution and member of Swatch Group’s Extended Group Management Board, was present at the event and highlighted OMEGA’s growing retail network, saying, “We are committed to establishing stores at the best retail addresses around the world and we are pleased to add Santiago to that list. Our expansion in this dynamic region reflects the growing enthusiasm for luxury products in the Chilean market and shows that OMEGA’s sophisticated timepieces, innovative watchmaking and quality products resonate with Chileans.”
Ms Crawford joined guests at the dinner as well and addressed the audience in a speech about her work with the brand and her affinity for OMEGA’s timepieces and involvements.
“When I started working with OMEGA in 1995, the company already had a great reputation as a watchmaker,” said Ms Crawford. “It was an honor to collaborate with the brand on the design process of some of the earlier Constellation models,” she continued. “Representing OMEGA continues to be an amazing adventure, and I love being a part of the OMEGA family.”
On OMEGA’s 18-year partnership with the world renowned ambassador, Mr Aeschlimann said, “Cindy has been promoting our products longer than any other of OMEGA’s ambassadors and she is a perfect representative for our brand. It has always been a pleasure working with her and her inspiration continues to be of great value to OMEGA.”

The OMEGA Constellation “Quarter Moon”
For the special occasion, Ms Crawford wore the OMEGA Constellation “Quarter Moon”, which marked the timepiece’s debut.
This OMEGA Constellation dazzles with a luxurious 18K red gold case and a breath-taking 18K red gold dial accented with pearled white mother-of-pearl and 126 glittering single-cut diamonds creatively arranged in the shape of delicate quarter moons. The bezel is paved with 32 full-cut diamonds. This extraordinary timepiece is presented on an 18K red gold bracelet. Powering this exotic Constellation is the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8421, a state-of-the-art mechanical movement with an 18K red gold rotor and balance bridge and equipped with a silicon balance spring. It is delivered with a full four-year warranty.
Chile’s first OMEGA Boutique
OMEGA welcomes visitors to its newest boutique located in the “luxury district” of the Parque Arauco in Santiago, one of Chile’s largest shopping centers. The OMEGA Boutique makes a bold statement with a 10-meter-high façade. The showcases and dazzling display windows incorporate themes of sun, water, earth and time – elements that are a part of the brand’s design concept and can be found in OMEGA’s flagship boutiques around the world.
After being greeted by a staff of specially trained sales associates, visitors will have the opportunity to see the full range of men's and women's watches from the main watch families Constellation, Seamaster, Speedmaster and De Ville, including the exquisite Constellation Luxury Edition wristwatches featured at the event.

Stardance
Stardance features a spectacular moon phase created from a finely-crafted fragment of the Enstatite EH3 meteorite. This rare piece of space rock boasts scintillating nano-diamonds believed to have been formed in cosmic collisions that occurred billions of years ago, pre-dating the formation of our solar system.
Surrounded by an aventurine night sky, the fragment of meteorite represents the moon, making this horological complication especially dazzling and also making Stardance the first watch in the world to contain interstellar diamonds.

15 Days with the Bell & Ross Officer's Chronograph - Enjoy Your Surroundings!
I sometimes think that as watch fans we have lost the plot.
Well the movement of the Officer's Chronograph is quite good! But today I want to talk about the "body" that holds the heart. The case of the Officer's Chronograph is indeed special.
The case is extremely well balanced. The finish is beyond first rate. The lines are true, the curves still gentle and forgiving on the wrist.
A case, the crown and the pushers... we take these things for granted. But think about it pals and gals - this is the ONE part of the watch that you are in the most direct contact with.
The case is (apart from my smudge marks) beautifully executed. The lugs slope nicely around the wrist. The crown is tactile and very, very nice to use. And the push-pieces work smoothly and precisely.
I am now well into the second week, and sadly already regretfully counting the days until it needs fly back to it's home base. Stay tuned!
