MB&F at BaselWorld

I had the good fortune to review the MB&F collection with another Californian - Steve Hallock

Steve has been instrumental in helping MB&F grow and prosper in North America.
We will have continued coverage of MB&F and they will be one of the founding members of the Tempus Fugit Buyers guide. YES - you read this correctly. I will be launching an online Buyer's Guide. Stay Tuned!

Spaceba Raketa!

Okay, so there I was checking out some of the more loftily priced Swiss watches at BaselWorld's Hall 4.  And I spied with my little eye some old friends from the cold war -
Courtesy of Raketa
This is the Petrodvorets Classic, featuring Raketa's 2609 HA movement.  The self described Head of Design & Propaganda - Jacques von Poller gave me the grand tour of the new collection and briefed me on the rebirth of Raketa.  More on this in future posts.

Maurice De Mauriac

Magnus and Maurice
One of the more enjoyable aspects of BaselWorld is the chance for more informal meetings.  I got a late night message from Maurice De Mauriac and at 4:00 the next day we got together with another blogger - Magnus Bosse and had a peek at what he is up to.

There will be quite a bit more in the coming days - stay tuned!

A Sunday in Luzern and Basel

So life is, in measures, what you make of it.  Sunday morning found me heading to Basel from Luzern.  But, I suspect on some subconscious level, I was really looking for something beyond watches.  I stopped in the early morning to take this -
Swans in Luzern
And I hurried off to catch my train to Basel.  And as I got off the train I was informed by several people that I should take the tram instead of walking.  Now something you need to know about me - I LOVE trams!  But, born in Ohio - I refuse to avoid walking when it is possible.  But alas, I missed a few turns, got turned around, and all seemed lost.  But then, I looked at my Ochs und Junior Tinta Tintin and thought what Herge's character would have done... kept his head - Tintin would not have been punked! He would have taken a moment, asked directions, and made his way.

And so I enjoyed a half hour actually wandering the streets of Basel, somewhat misplaced - not quite lost

I stopped at a gas station and got some directions.  So I wandered - and I reveled!  And I found some new friends.  I had forgotten what it was that I loved about Switzerland.  And I thank, really thank my poor sense of direction for reminding me of this.  A wonderful place with surprises around every corner!

So I thank you Luzern, Basel - and in fact - thank you Switzerland for reminding you
about what makes you so special!

So after a day of meeting with the watchmaking elite, I was winding my way back to the train station and ran into this -

I had arrived early in the morning to see several bands of "pipers" and drummers lining up.  I had no real idea what it was all in aid of.  And when I was "released" from the halls at 5:00 - much more was clear to me.  It was a festival!  I sincerely hope that you watch fans can forgive me for the non-watch content.  But I must say - merci and thank you!  Thank you for reminding me of what is truly wonderful about your beautiful country, thank you for welcoming me.

Thank you

In the Graham Paddock

Okay, I have to say that Graham is on a roll!  I had the opportunity to visit them this past Monday at their BaselWorld set-up.

The Men from Graham!
I got a chance to view a lot of the new collection - sorry, no details for now - you will have to stay tuned!

And I also had time to spend with Samir Shah - the Managing Director for Graham USA (He is the one on the right in the photo).  I was very, very impressed by the new additions, and the Graham paddock was a FANTASTIC re-imagination for displaying the Graham collection!  The atmosphere was so close to an F1 paddock I almost expected to turn around and see Jackie Stewart!  I really cannot say enough about it - it was really something!

With luck (and with the kind help of Graham) I hope to be doing another 15 day review in the not too distant future.

Hanhart Update

I had a meeting on Saturday that proved the business management golden rule - dynamic, successful leaders tend to attract and retain dynamic, talented people. This is Gabriela Von Malaise, Hanhart's Head of Marketing. Despite a schedule that would exhaust a marathon runner, Gabriela shared one of the most engaging, informative, and downright enjoyable presentations I have seen so far! With the new Pioneer, and a top-notch team, the sky's the limit for Hanhart!

Girard-Perregaux's New communicator

It is always great to meet the people behind the press releases and company updates. Yesterday Dimitra Frechelin was kind enough to meet with me here in Basel over coffee. She is really sharp and a great communicator - I suspect Girard-Perregaux's new Media Relations & PR Manager will be really spreading the good word! Congratulations to GP for getting such a great person for this position!

Girard Perregaux's ww.tc Chronograph for Christie's Green Auction

THE CAUSE

The inaugural Green Auction held on Earth Day in
2010 raised $2.4 million.
This year, on March 29th, Christie’s auction house
will stage its Green Auction to benefit the environment,
with proceeds earmarked for not-for-profit environmental
organizations such as:

• Conservation International – the international association
empowers societies to responsibly and sustainably care for
nature.

• Natural Resources Defense Council – this American
environmental action group, combines the grassroots power
of 1.3 million members.

• Oceana - it focuses solely on ocean conservation,
protecting marine ecosystems and endangered species.

THE WATCH

The Swiss Haute Horlogerie Manufacture Girard-
Perregaux joins this collective action by donating a
unique timepiece: the ww.tc Chronograph for Green
Auction.

Stefano Macaluso, President of the Sowind Group
said: “We are pleased to create an exclusive watch for
the Green Auction. At Girard-Perregaux, we are fully
aware of the ecological issues at hand and feel it is
important to incorporate environmental responsibility
in our business philosophy.”

The ww.tc (world wide time control) collection is one
of the Girard-Perregaux’ iconic lines.
The exclusive GP033C0 in-house movement combines
chronograph and date functions with world time
indication. Its finishes, which can be seen through the
sapphire case-back, are examples of the brand’s finest
tradition: circular graining on the main plate, Côtes
de Genève on the bridges and oscillating weight, or
blued steel screws.

For the ww.tc Chronograph for Green Auction,
the generously sized case is satin-finished, which
emphasizes the subtle strength of its design and the
24-hour ring has been decorated with a green/white
contrast to honor the Green Auction cause.

Zeno's new model - the Event

Courtesy of Zeno
43 mm, powered by Swiss-made Ronda precision quartz movement.

And in Zeno's own words -
Accommodating the current gentlemen’s trend, Zeno-Watch Basel
is presenting its Event watch with a classic silhouette and in various colors.
It is reminiscent of the 1950s, when men placed considerable emphasis on
proper attire, quality, and craftsmanship.

Given the ergonomic yet decidedly classic shape of its stainless steel case
with a diameter of 43 mm, the casually elegant Event chronograph is the
perfect match for the masculine wrist.  Sleek purity, superb artisanship,
and an appealing price-performance ratio are the persuasive attributes
of this fine wristwatch.  A cambered, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal
protects the dial with the three counters that are crowned by the maker’s
signature.  The graceful luminescent Dauphine hands and dots at the
hour markers are subtle accents.  The chronograph is powered by a
Swiss-made Ronda precision quartz movement. The watch comes with
an embossed or smooth stitched calfskin strap and a prong buckle or
a fold over clasp. The dial color choices are black, white, brown, and blue.
In all of its configurations, the Event cuts a dashing figure,
regardless of the occasion.

2011 BENZINGER BOUTIQUE Collection

This just in from Grieb & Benzinger -

Masters of the Skeletonized Watch:
The New 2011 BENZINGER BOUTIQUE Collection
Jochen Benzinger, Hermann Grieb and Georg Bartkowiak,
makers of the high-end luxury label GRIEB
& BENZINGER PLATINUM begin the year 2011
with exceptional new eye-catchers from their second
line, BENZINGER BOUTIQUE.

The new BENZINGER BOUTIQUE models may even
surprise connoisseurs  of the high-end scene: up to this
point, the BENZINGER watches have mainly been masterpieces
of movement decoration and skeletonization.

Clever modifications added to the BENZINGER line’s
mechanical movements now exhibit the same sort of
technical know-how that the partners display in the
high-end brand GRIEB & BENZINGER PLATINUM.

Georg Barkowiak and Jochen Benzinger uniquely
prove they are able to walk the fine line between
traditional technology and exceptional design, making
them a holistic unit and creating handmade, one-of-a-kind
pieces with high rarity value, guaranteeing their future
owners corresponding exclusivity.

The new collection comes in solid red gold watch cases of
contemporary design and perfect finish.  The hand-guilloché
bezel and the high gold content of the solid case bear
witness to the substantial presence of these new watches.

The BENZINGER classic, the timepiece that collectors
all over the world have loved for years, is the skeletonized
watch. In a red gold case it is clearly even more valuable
and more impressive than ever. A view through the new
skeletonized timepiece NEW BLOSSOM shows exactly
how filigreed Jochen Benzinger works with his saw and
graver to created a romantic floral work of art by hand.

It is obvious that the NEW BLOSSOM model,
housed in a 43 mm case, is not only for men, but also
destined to grace the wrist of the modern woman.

Courtesy of Grieb & Benzinger
The new models REGULATOR PHAROS and POLARIS are,
however, distinctly masculine. Both watches are outfitted with a
specially modified mechanical movement that was altered using self-
manufactured components.

The REGULATOR PHAROS catches the eye alone by virtue of its unusual visuals.

Courtesy of Grieb & Benzinger

There has never been a regulator that has arranged its hour and
minute hands in just this way, and thus it would be very interesting
to observe the watch without its dial in order to view the elaborate
design of the regulator display. That, however, would be a shame,
for this dial comprising various parts decorated

in typical Benzinger style is also a work of art that captures the eye.
The hand-guilloché base dial crafted in solid Sterling silver shines
with a white Breguet frosted finish, a finishing technique that is
currently only in use by Jochen Benzinger. The functional skeletonized
part of the dial is crafted in 18-karat red gold, as is the solid 43 mm case.

The POLARIS will certainly delight fans of visible technology.

Courtesy of Grieb & Benzinger

The focus of this watch is its hour and minute display, which visibly floats
above the dial, including the small seconds display at 6 o’clock.

The guilloché base dial is crafted using the same methods as the dial
of the REGULATOR PHAROS. The half-skeletonized dial allows
a view of the modifications of the hour and minute display, confirming
the technical authority of this company. Also like the REGULATOR
PHAROS, the skeletonized part of the dial and the 43 mm case are
crafted in 18-karat red gold.

The movements of the REGULATOR PHAROS and POLARIS
models are decorated in the new, technical style of Jochen Benzinger,
which also exhibits their beauty from the back: guilloché, hand-skeletonization,
and hand-engraving as far as the eye can see. Because of the enormous amount of
handcrafted elements, only 100 customized timepieces can be created per year.

Jochen Benzinger is acknowledged as the leading specialist worldwide
for hand-skeletonized timepieces and guilloché work. Watch movements
are skeletonized, guilloché, hand-engraved, and even sometimes technically
modified by hand in his workshop in a traditional manner using special
historical machines and tools. This allows him to create his own typical
style of horological art. For many years, Benzinger and business partner
Georg Bartkowiak have manufactured chiefly in the name of big brands
such as IWC, Fabergé, Chronoswiss and Tourneau.

The Girard-Perregaux 1966 Full Calendar harmonizes the functions and

Pioneers! O Pioneers!

First - a quick tip of the hat to Walt Whitman -

Pioneers! O Pioneers!

COME my tan-faced children,
Follow well in order, get your weapons ready,
Have you your pistols? have you your sharp-edged axes?
Pioneers! O pioneers!
For we cannot tarry here,
We must march my darlings, we must bear the brunt of danger,
We the youthful sinewy races, all the rest on us depend,
Pioneers! O pioneers!
O you youths, Western youths,
So impatient, full of action, full of manly pride and friendship,
Plain I see you Western youths, see you tramping with the foremost,
Pioneers! O pioneers!
Have the elder races halted?
Do they droop and end their lesson, wearied over there beyond the
seas?
We take up the task eternal, and the burden and the lesson,
Pioneers! O pioneers!

(Walt Whitman)

But now for the watch content -

PIONEER MonoControl

PIONEER TwinControl

PIONEER TwinDicator
Courtesy of Hanhart

In Hanhart's own words:

PIONEER MonoControl, TwinControl and TwinDicator –

A modern interpretation of legendary chronographs

At the Baselworld 2011 watch and jewellery fair, Hanhart is presenting three
new models from its Pioneer collection. In terms of their design and the
technology used, the MonoControl, the TwinControl and the TwinDicator are
based on the brand’s legendary chronographs, thus carrying on the company’s
long tradition and maintaining its high level of expertise while implementing
these qualities in a contemporary way. With the hour counter integrated into the
small seconds and the displays positioned right on the edge of the dial, the
Pioneer TwinDicator in particular is a highlight of the collection.

In the first half of the 20th century, the Swiss German watch brand Hanhart was
a key pioneer in the development of highly functional precision chronographs.
For safe navigation and precise timekeeping in the air, on the land and on the
sea, these instrument watches had to meet incredibly strict criteria. They had to
be absolutely reliable, extremely precise and robust. Their design had just one
purpose to fulfil: perfect, flawless readability day and night along with easy
operation – with or without gloves. Hanhart’s chronographs have always
satisfied these high standards and continue to do so today.

What watch would Tintin wear? It arrived yesterday!

As you may recall, I recently put my marker down for a new (not pre-owned) watch.  Well, after a LOT of saving, and some waiting, the Fed Ex man arrived at my office yesterday.

Opening the envelope I found this hand-written note -

Oh yeah - a watch did come with it!  The due ore tinta - "tintin" blue!

I am going to spend the day getting acquainted.  I promise a more full report tomorrow!  But I can say that after 24 hours, I am very, very pleased with my purchase!

Friday, March 11, 2011

What watch would Tintin wear?

A bit of a teaser - tune in tomorrow!

West towards the East

Today really does not seem like a day for blogging about luxury items.  Here in California we are waiting for what are anticipated to be some small swells.  This morning saw me looking West to the East and thinking of my friends in Japan, and if the images from the news are any indication they need all of our good will and positive thoughts today and in the weeks to come.  So I chose my "Obara-san" watch, and am determined to do good things for others today.

Stung by the Scorpion

I bought this beauty about 7 months ago on Ebay.  I won the auction then had to chase the seller for 3 weeks before it was finally sent, and only then due to a threat from Ebay and PayPal.  This seller's Ebay name was The ___ Scorpion and my understanding is that they have been removed from PayPal all together.

When the watch arrived it was packed in a standard (i.e. not padded) envelope, was badly damaged and of course did not work.

Look at it now!

Thank you Ali for being such a great and patient watch maker!

GMT with an Alarm - Graham Swordfish Grillo

Courtesy of Graham
One of the watches that I often to consider to be the "one that got away" was Alain Silberstein's GMT Alarm watch.  Both Baume et Mercier and Panerai offered something similar (if more subdued).

But now Graham has come up with something that embodies a top notch complication in a rugged, ready for action watch.  Hours, minutes, seconds, GMT - and an ALARM!

www.grahamlondon.com

Something new is on the way...

It is seldom that I buy a brand new watch.  But after putting my pennies away, I was finally ready to pull the trigger this past week.  It is on its way now, and I will keep you posted.

Hautlence HL2.0

Here is a quick BaselWorld preview -

Courtesy of TWI
This is the Hautlence HL2.0, or rather I should say this is the "inner workings" of the Hautlence HL2.0

Here is what Hautlence had to say about it -

It took the entire team over three years to develop,
internally and in the utmost secrecy, a true novelty
in the world of watchmaking that breaks away from
the mechanisms of the past without forgoing
historic regulation methods.

Futuristic in its construction method and the way in
which it delivers the time, this piece is truly
revolutionary.

Thanks to the integration work of the manufacture
calibre and to deep reflection, the shape of the
gear teeth has been optimised, higher-quality
oscillators have been created and the energy
consumption of the various complications has
been regulated. Through effort and constant
research, HAUTLENCE is now able to unveil the
second stage of its vision of innovative time
display.

The most remarkable part of the HL2.0 is that the
complete escapement system, including the plate,
bridges, and wheels move to a new position each
time the hour jumps, making four complete 60°
rotations every single day. To counter balance the
debilitating effects of gravity on precision,
HAUTLENCE has made the entire mechanism
move; a first in watchmaking history.

This mechanical masterpiece has several objectives:

To display the hours in an aperture, on a 12-link chain
moving in a controlled, regulated manner every 60 minutes.
The movement of the chain is from hour to hour is
purposely slowed to 4 seconds; as opposed to an
instantaneous system, which is too quick, or to a
continuous-action system that does not allow the numeral
to be visualised correctly between two times.

To obtain an optimal chronometric result without
disturbance from the energy required for the
complication and animation of the display, in a system
that compensates for the effects of gravity.
The regulating organ is a set of gears that change
position (60°) every hour like the tourbillon,
which does this continuously.

So Wendy has been away on business all week, and brought this back for me from the SWATCH boutique at SFO -

C7 Rapide Chronograph

This just in from Christopher Ward -

RED ALERT!
Christopher Ward unveils its New Red C7 Rapide Chronograph

The retro styled C7 Rapide Chronograph was inspired by the golden age of motor racing during the middle part of the last century when 'gentlemen drivers' had less regard for their own safety than for each other. Motor racing was an extremely dangerous pastime and spectators, never mind the drivers, often had to be on red alert. The new Red Rapide captures the raw passion, risk and skill of drivers such as Fangio, Ascari, Moss and Brabham while at the same time demanding attention. It will never go unnoticed.

Features of the new Red C7 Rapide include a split-second stopwatch function, a tachymeter bezel, luminescent indices and hands and 10 atm water resistance. The 42mm watch is powered by a thermo-compensated ETA 251.272 quartz movement and will be available from April 2011.

Happy Birthday Reverso!
