The Cenote

From Papar -

Courtesy of Papar

The dynamic duo behind Papar has taken a beat, and come back with something special. A sporty diver that is a refreshing change from the standard issue Submariner tribute.

The Cenote is available in two versions. A rose gold PVD titanium (my personal favorite), and for the not as stylistically daring, a more subdued (but still different) titanium model with what I will call a "latte" dial.

Both priced at $995.

From Fidel, to Gina, to...

Wennenes auction house will be handling several items from the estate of Gina Lollobrigida on May 28 and 29. And one particular item caught my eye -

Courtesy of Wennenes

This is, as you can tell, not the infamous Rolex that Fidel Castro was frequently photographed wearing. No, this is a rather curious piece.

Per Wennenes -

SEIKO MEN'S TITANIUM WRIST WATCH FIDEL CASTRO WATCH

37x41 mm titanium case, 'to Gina with admiration' personalisation, 'Fidel Castro', LCD dial, quartz movement, titanium strap.

So how did one of Italy's most famous film stars come to have a digital Seiko watch with a personalized engraving from "Miami's Most Wanted"?

A great article explaining their meeting and how the watch came to her wrist can be found courtesy of the Guardian -

Long story short? When her acting days had come to an end, she embarked on a second act as a photojournalist. And it was in that capacity that they met (for a second time) when she was granted an exclusive interview. Apparently it went well, as Castro removed his watch and gave it to her. He later had it engraved.

The Admiral AC-ONE 45 Chronograph

From Corum -

Courtesy of Corum
This one is a bit special, and might have flown in under the radar for some of us when it first dropped.

The case is in the eponymous Admiral Dodecagonal shape. It is of titanium and measures - you guessed it, 45 mm in diameter.  It is rated to be water resistant to 300 meters.

You will also notice the bracelet is also of titanium, ant it has a pretty dope pattern engraved in the middle links. I am assuming that it is meant to replicate the detail on the dial, which is described as “Grenadier fendu”. Now as my friends Sven and Rod will attest, French is not my strong suit, but Google Translate informs me that this translates as "split pomegranate". I encourage anyone out there to offer a more accurate definition. Having said that, I do like pomegranate, and in truth kinda' like that idea for a naming convention.

The movement is the CO 132 which provides hours, minutes, seconds, date and a chronograph.  As the dial will attest, a try-compax with the date between the 4 o'clock and 5 o'clock indices.

40 Years for Hublot

Has it really been that long?  Apparently so, because a press release reached Tempus Fugit HQ this AM regarding Hublot's 40th Anniversary collection.  There are three pieces, but I thought I'd stick to the one that spoke to me -

Courtesy of Hublot

The case is of titanium and measures 45 mm in diameter, so this is clearly not an "homage" piece. The movement is Caliber Hublot HUB1112 Self-winding movement, featuring 42 hours of power reserve. Had Carlo Crocco stuck with it, this might have been what he'd have designed. The price is not for the feint of heart - $8,300 US for this version.

A special movement from Bell & Ross.  Self-winding mechanical, skeleton chronograph.  Hours, minutes, small seconds with a date at 6 o'clock.  The chronograph measures time periods via 60- second and 30-minute timers.

The HL2.3 from Hautlence

This just in from Hautlence -
Courtesy of Hautlence
The HL2.0 collection represents the second generation of HAUTLENCE watches. After 4 years of development, it was first shown in 2010 and officially launched in its final version in 2011.

Faithful to the brand’s fundamental concept of offering a different way of reading time, this collection goes even further and establishes HAUTLENCE among the most prestigious contemporary watchmaking brands. The HL2.0 models display half-trailing jumping hours  one of the special features of this second collection  retrograde minutes  a signature of the brand  and a power-reserve indicator. The collection also includes an automatic movement for the first time.

Constructed around the retrograde minutes function, the jumping hours mechanism consists of a 12-link chain activated by a connecting-rod/crank as in the HL collection. The retrograde minutes are indicated on a 180° sector of the dial. An ingenious mechanism governs the movement of the assembly with a speed control that protects the components from any shocks arising from its operation. The chain rotates the mobile bridge through 60° each hour, compensating for the effect of gravity. To provide sufficient energy, the principal barrel, wound by the automatic system, winds a second barrel, which drives the display complication.

Developed and produced by the Neuchâtel brand’s own teams, this collection is the first to offer an in-house mechanical movement with automatic winding. Three models are currently available, each limited to 28 numbered timepieces: the new version HL2.3 in titanium, the HL2.1 in 18-carat white gold and the HL2.2 in 18-carat 4N rose gold.

THREE PATENTS FOR AN EXCEPTIONAL TIMEPIECE

The first patent concerns the half-trailing hours chain (as opposed to an instant system that is too fast to appreciate, or a dragging system that cannot be read correctly between the hours): every 60 minutes the chain advances in 3-4 seconds without jumps or loss of energy, making it possible to admire the beauty of the movement and its mechanisms in action.

The second patent relates to the regulating organ integrated into the mobile bridge movement. Its constantly changing position, driven by the display, compensates statistically for the effect of gravity, enhancing its precision.

The third patent covers the operation of the movement's two barrels. The principal barrel is wound by the automatic system and transmits the energy needed to wind a second barrel that is devoted exclusively to driving the complication. It is kept fully wound by the main barrel to ensure that an optimal level of energy is available to change each hour. This means the complex systems are powered independently without affecting the precision of the watch.

THE FUNCTIONING OF THE MOVEMENT

When the retrograde minutes hand returns to zero to begin the next hour, the connecting-rod mechanism drives 1 revolution of the system by means of the function star. This is when the mechanical magic of the HAUTLENCE HL2.0 starts to work:

The mechanisms come to life simultaneously, powered by the energy in the complication barrel. The speed control that allows the chain links to advance the hours in 3-4 seconds begins to function and completes 48 revolutions at high speed (as opposed to instantly). The half-trailing hours display advances one revolution powered by the system's gear train. A coupler transmits the kinematics of the chain to the mobile bridge movement incorporating the regulating organ, which rotates through 60°.

The kinematics of the full HL2.0 movement are structured in three dimensions by the use of special bevelled gears. These bevelled gears are produced with uniquely shaped tools to achieve optimal efficiency in gear-train transmission.

This timepiece also includes a power-reserve indicator as well as an oscillating weight in 18-carat gold. All numerals and indicators are luminescent to ensure excellent readability at night.
