Here's What's in a Name! A Reply from Eberhard

Hi guys, we could not leave this question unanswered…James is correct, Traversetolo is the name of a small place near Parma, in Italy, in a region where good wine, good food and real friendship are a religion…At the time of the creation of this model, Eberhard & Co. wanted to honor a story of true friendship that was born in Traversetolo, and there was no better way to do so than naming an everlasting timepiece after it!

From Raffaella, Eberhard & Co. Switzerland

So here is  another "inspiration" from that magic place -

A bit more old-school!

Naples played host to the season finale for the Audi Sailing Series Melges 32.  Audi-Eberhard Melges 32 ran out the winners of this final leg, pipping  one of the series strongest competitors Robertissima, and besting Fantastica - last year's winner.

This being the final leg, it also marked the conclusion of the series.  Mascalzone Latino proved to be the best overall, with their skipper Vincenzo Onorato being awarded Eberhard's Scafodat 500.

The team from Audi-Eberhard finished third in the overall rankings.

Next up on the calendar will be Gold Cup starting in November - tomorrow, in fact!  Audi-Eberhard Melges 20 will join the world's best in Naples from November first through the fourth.

Traversetolo - what's in a name?

So as you know, I am now a full week in with my fantastic Eberhard Traversetolo.  The time keeping has been quite good - best day so far was +4 seconds, the worst +7.

So as you can imagine, I got to wondering where the naming convention came from.  I decided to do some homework on my own without asking the folks at Eberhard (although I suspect that I will hear from them shortly) - and here's what I came up with.

Traversetolo is a municipality in the Province of Parma, Italy - this is according to Wikipedia, so it must be true ; )

Having said that, feel free to drop me a line if you know the real answer.  Former and current Eberhard employees are welcome to give feedback as well.  I will give it until Friday, then ask for help from the source.

So here are a few images - of the watch!

A tribute to "SIDEWAYS" as I'm in Santa Barbara
I think what keeps speaking to me about this watch is the semi-hybrid feel it has.  Yes, it is the same size, shape, movement, dial layout as the other Traversetolos, but it has a more modern look and feel.  Almost slightly Bauhaus.  The white dial is almost porcelain in its appearance, and the polished stainless steel markers and hands offer a wonderful counterpoint.
And while I am a die-hard fan for the "classic" black and white Traversetolo models of recent vintage, this one was just that little bit different.  The red accents on the dial and with the strap stitching give it that extra little something.  This is still an Eberhard Traversetolo, there can be no doubt.  But it is a wonderful variation.  Clearly the same family, but not every brother and sister look alike - nor should they!

LIMES Endurance Leviathan

This is the latest offering from LIMES, the Endurance Leviathan!  Weighing in at an impressive 44.5 mm in diameter, this is the latest iteration of the great dive watches coming from the Ickler's.

One of the biggest developments with the Endurance Leviathan is that the case now has a new crown construction which employs a screw-down tube and two separate O-ring gaskets in the case back.  This provides extra water resistance.

Powered by a self-winding SW 200, the Endurance Leviathan is rated to 300 meters for water resistance.

Yes, complications are fun - be they chronographs, GMTs or alarms, but sometimes you just want the basics - hours, minutes, seconds.  By the same token, you want it to look at least a little bit special.  To that end, I present you Baume et Mercier's Classima 8791.

Traversetolo - packaging

I've been at this blogging business so long, I forgot about the time honored tradition of the "unboxing" ceremony so popular on watch forums. Well, in an effort to reconstruct it visually...

The packaging is first rate. A beautifully "semi-rustic" finish to the wood that the box is made from. A truly great "first impression".

Meridian Watches - Made in England!

What's that you say?  Who is Meridian?

In just a few weeks' time, Salon QP will convene and with it, the introduction of Meridian's range of timekeepers.  Meridian is a new brand, based in England.  And by that I don't mean a P.O. box or bunch of offices.  These watches are all made by hand in England!

I don't want to steal their thunder - so here is a preliminary sketch to give you a flavor.  What I can tell you is that these are truly HAND MADE watches.  No mass stamping, outsourcing from third-party suppliers - no compromising.  This is the real deal.

This will be a watch that you not only want to have now, but for a lifetime.   Folks, as you can imagine, I see and handle a LOT of watches - this is something that is truly going to take your breath away.  It is not a show pony, to be locked up in your safe - this is a watch that demands to be worn!
Courtesy of Meridian
Here's the news - straight from the source -

In rural Norfolk, The Meridian Watch Company are hand-making watches that remind the world of England’s proud watchmaking heritage.

As proclaimed by their slogan, 'Made in England', Meridian manufactures the components and sources the materials from the home of Byron and Blake. From the case and back, machined as a pair to fit perfectly, to the leather or webbing strap, hand- stitched in Surrey, every element is carefully hand-worked to their exacting standards and English sensibilities – understated, enduring and purposeful. Lastly, the base Swiss movement is hand-finished in Meridian's style – with added complications improving accuracy – and the watch is assembled in the workshop.

Meridian watches are intended to be worn, knocked about and enjoyed: the straps grow to the individual contours of your wrist, the sapphire crystal is coated on both sides by a British military contractor for unsurpassed clarity and toughness, and the case has been designed to handle a lifetime's exposure to the elements, both in England and abroad. To facilitate this, the packaging includes a complimentary passport holder from SmythsonTM of Bond Street. Handmade tools also accompany every Meridian timepiece.

What Watch would Indiana Jones Wear?

Now to be clear - we know what watch Harrison Ford would wear - and I respect his partnership as it has a charitable benefit.

BUT -

What watch would Henry Jones Jr. wear?
Courtesy of JeanRichard
I think it would be this one!  I can see Indiana checking the time before boarding his flight to Nepal.  Double breasted suit, fedora and an adventure awaiting.

But then again I can also see him checking the time to calculate what time the sun will hit the map room.

And finally I see him pushing up the sleeve of his tweed jacket to see if the bell is ready to ring and end his Archeology 101 lecture.

So here are the details:

In SKYFALL, to be released in autumn of 2012, James Bond will take to the screen for the 23rdtime with Daniel Craig again assuming the role of the world’s favourite secret agent. And once again, 007 will wear an OMEGA Seamaster.

To celebrate its seventh performance in a supporting role in a Bond film, OMEGA is launching the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M”SKYFALL” Limited Edition watch.
Courtesy of OMEGA

Like every Planet Ocean, the new watch is ready for underwater adventure. Equipped with a unidirectional rotating diving bezel and a helium escape valve, the watch is water resistant 60 bar / 600 metres / 2000 feet.

The watch has a 42 mm brushed and polished stainless steel case and a matching patented screw-and-pin bracelet whose divers’ clasp is engraved with “007”. The rotating diving bezel is distinguished by its matt black ceramic ring with a chromium nitride diving scale.
Courtesy of OMEGA
The applied indexes on the matt structured black dial are coated with white Super-LumiNova emitting a blue light as are the polished, facetted rhodium-plated hands. The exception is the minute hand which emits a green light, as does the dot on the diving bezel. This feature makes it easy for divers to keep track of their time at a glance. At the 7 o’clock position is a 007 logo and at 3 o’clock, there is a date window.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M SKYFALL Limited Edition is powered by OMEGA's exclusive new Co-Axial calibre 8507. SKYFALL 007 is on its rotor in black-varnished engraving. The movement is visible through sapphire crystal in the brushed screw-in caseback.

Along with OMEGA’s industry-changing Co-Axial technology, the watch is equipped with an "Si14" silicon balance spring. The combination is so stable and reliable that the Planet Ocean comes with a full four-year warranty.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M SKYFALL wristwatch is being produced in an edition limited to 5,007 pieces and is delivered in a special presentation box.

The New Performance Watches from Zegna

A long time ago, back when the dinosaurs roamed the earth - I was an English teacher.  It was 1992 and I had been hired to teach English in Japan.  I was instructed, in no uncertain terms that suits were required, that said suits should be blue as it did not show dirt, etc., and that blue was what everyone else wore.

Armed with this information, I wandered into a store and looked around.  The sales people were quite helpful, and in the end I was presented with several respectable looking blue suits.  Some, apparently, you could even put in the washing machine in a pinch.  I shudder at the memory ; )

But there on the "sample" rack hung this beautiful brown, sort of glen plaid suit.  It was just hanging there.  But it certainly caught my eye.  Like the really intriguing girl in art history class, there was something about it.  Long story short, risking the wrath of my new Japanese employers, I bought the brown suit.  It was an Ermenegildo Zegna.  To this day, the good folks at Zegna have a very, very special place in my heart.  I met my wife while wearing that suit, and to this day it remains her favorite - we keep looking for something just like it, but not quite finding it.  Someday!

And in that spirit of adventure and discovery, I would like to introduce you to one of the new Performance watches from Zegna.  This is the  High Performance Sea Diver.

These watches are manufactured by the Sowind Group - of Girard-Perregaux/JeanRichard fame.

Traversetolo Day Three - True Beauty is a Rare Thing

With all due respect to everyone else out there making watches - look at this movement! It would be easy to do a half-ass job with the movement - to simply bang in whatever is available and call it done. Not so with the Traversetolo. I don't want to go into too much detail - I will go into much more depth later in the week. But for now, this is sort of like those first few dates - where you really grow to appreciate the beauty of the woman sitting across the table from you.

More to come - stay tuned.

Vulcain and the Presidents in 3 Parts

Well, as they say, the third time is the charm!

As it is Presidential season here in the US, I thought I'd share some Vulcain watch history.

So let's clear some facts:

Part 1 - The Vulcain was for sometime given as a gift to US Presidents and Vice Presidents.  For example, Richard Nixon got his Vulcain Cricket while he was Vice President in 1955. He received his Cricket from the National Association of Watch and Clock Makers.  He was in very good company.
It has been worn by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Lyndon B. Johnson.

PART 2 -  is for me, where it gets really interesting.  PART 2 is when Vulcain is dormant, a victim of the Quartz Crisis.  The company - at least its name - is held by the people behind Revue Thomen, and most particularly it was Michel Ditisheim and the Paajanen of Helsinki, Finland who really kept the Vulcain Cricket alive.  The Paajanen's hold a special place in their heart for America - and to that end they arranged to produce a limited number of Vulcain Crickets to present to US Presidents and Vice Presidents when/if they should ever visit Finland.  Now keep in mind, they are selling very few Vulcain Crickets - they do this out of a sense of connection to the US - their family had fled the advancing Soviet army and they have always viewed the US as their friends.  And by the way - it is really nice for the US to have friends like the Paajanens!

Gerald Forld, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan among others.  And most recently Vice President Biden have all received a Vulcain Cricket from the Paajanens.
Keijo Paajanen with Gerald Ford
Keijo Paajanen with Jimmy Carter
A thank you letter from Ronald Reagan

Part 3 - This is the "now time".  I believe that President Obama received a Vulcain from the new ownership of Vulcain, and my hope is that this tradition continues.  But as we often say in the world of foreign affairs - it is about winning "hearts and minds".  The Paajanens have won my heart and mind.  This is a family motivated by nothing but good will.  I truly wish there were more people like them.

The First Fifteen Days with MY Eberhard Traversetolo

So I often get the question - what is your favorite watch?  A little like "which is your favorite child?"  My parents, by the way, had no difficulty in answering that question... let's just say I've learned to try a little harder ; )

At any rate, one of my all-time favorite watches is Eberhard's Traversetolo.  In a phenomenally good year, apart from the beautiful SWATCH that Wendy might gift me with, I only really have enough pocket money to occasionally consider a new watch.  So after about 7 months of fighting the homeless for empty bottles and cans to return (KIDDING!), I was able to save enough for one of my all - time favorites!

So this 15 days is different than the other reviews where I return the watch to its rightful owner.  This one is all mine - so let's get started!  The First Fifteen Days with MY Eberhard Traversetolo begins NOW!

Three Days in Santa Barbara with Hanhart

This past weekend, Hanhart USA in the person of Anthony Siragusa did a bit of barnstorming here in Santa Barbara. It was a three-day Hanhart-fest at 33 Jewels. And for those three days, there was perhaps the largest collection of Hanhart watches and stop watches "in captivity".

And the local watch enthusiasts were out in force.

And what was really great about these three days was the level of customer engagement. Anthony Siragusa really seems to understand the importance of making those personal connections with the ACTUAL CUSTOMER.

And I am pleased to say that I still have most of the old "moves" from my Tourneau/DOXA days!

Spoiler alert -

33 Jewels at El Paseo is the newest Hanhart Retail partner!

Graham Goes the Extra Mile at the Baja 1000

For whatever reason, writing this little "bloggy-wog" affords me the opportunity to meet a lot of people in the watch industry.  Eric Loth of Graham has certainly been one of the most interesting and engaging folks I have met recently.  One of the things that kept recurring in our conversation was Graham's (and his) commitment to making not just "cool" watches, but rather to make useful, accurate watches that are also cool.  The whole idea behind the Trigger for chronograph operations was not based upon the cool factor.  It was a response to a problem - how to make the chronograph button function as smoothly and precisely as possible.  Of course it doesn't hurt that its also cool!
Courtesy of Graham
But the other sense that I got from Mr. Loth was that he is not one to sit on life's sidelines, he likes to get in the game.  During our meeting in Los Angeles he explained that he was certainly happy to be in the US, but was a bit disappointed in that he would not be able to take part in his regular car racing schedule in Europe.  Not a person (or a company) to merely try to co-brand, Mr. Loth and Graham are actively involved in what they do.

And to that end they participated in this year's Baja 1000 and produced a special watch -

Courtesy of Graham
Introducing the Chronofighter Oversize Score Baja 1000

A 47 mm black PVD steel case houses Graham's caliber G1747 self-winding chronograph movement.

Courtesy of Graham
And you know that the man who helped pioneer the idea of ceramic watches with Rado would have to have to add a special element or two when it comes to materials - and he has!  Carbon fiber is what the start/stop trigger is made of and the buckle is - you guessed it - black scratch-proof ceramic!  The story of the design and creation of the carbon fiber trigger is an adventure in itself, and I'll reach out to Graham to see if Mr. Loth might be willing to share it with us!

Alarming!

One of my favorite complications is the wrist alarm.  Of course most thoughts would immediately go to Vulcain, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Girard-Perregaux even.  And these are beautiful and worthy alarm watches.
Beautiful - but they certainly come at a price.

So what about the rest of us, are we to be consigned to either wear a G-Shock, or buy something that we may be able to afford some day, just not right now?

Auguste Reymond to the rescue!
Courtesy of Auguste Reymond
This is the "Boogie" Alarm from Auguste Reymond.  I like most everything about this watch except the name.  Sorry, I guess you can't have everything ; )

But to my way of thinking, this is what an alarm watch should be - legible, tactile, easy to use.  Hours, minutes, seconds, alarm.  No more, no less.  And while there are beautiful new in-house/manufacture concoctions out there that do truly amazing and wonderful things, Auguste Reymond has chosen the reliable (and dare say it) pedestrian AS 1475 Alarm movement from A. Schild.  Pedestrian in the best possible way.  When you need to get this serviced, a good, competent watch maker will be able to help you.  A most un-complicated complication!
