NUTS!

Per Gavox -

In December 1944, amid the frozen forests of the Ardennes, Bastogne became a crucible of endurance. American troops held the line through encirclement, snow, and relentless fire — a stand defined by grit, clarity of purpose, and the will to outlast the cold and the danger.

Courtesy of Gavox

In December 1944, Bastogne, Belgium, was under siege—cold, surrounded, and outnumbered. On December 22, the German commander demanded the American forces surrender or face obliteration. The visibly weary but resolute acting U.S. commander, Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe, famously responded with a single word, “NUTS!”

As the story goes:

  • McAuliffe, half-awake and incredulous, muttered, “Us surrender? Aw, nuts!”

  • Lieutenant Colonel Harry Kinnard urged him to use that defiant word in the formal reply. The message was typed:
    “To the German Commander: NUTS!
    The American Commander”

  • German officers, unfamiliar with American slang, asked if it meant yes or no. Colonel Joseph Harper translated gently: “In plain English, it’s the same as ‘go to hell.’” Wikipedia+4Wikipedia+4History Stack Exchange+4.

This bold retort epitomized the American refusal to yield—even when hope dimmed—and became the enduring symbol of Bastogne’s stand.

This is the latest offering from Michael Happe and Gavox. The Bastogne. It is of stainless steel and measures 36 mm in diameter. The movement is automatic (Miyota).

Truth or Dare?

Sometimes you should pick truth...

Courtesy of Tudor

So a bit about me. I am the proud owner of a Tudor x Rowing Blazers Black Bay. I have caught myself contemplating selling a few pieces from the bank safety deposit box to fund a Tudor GMT model - most likely with a white / opaline dial. I have long been a fan of the reinterpretation of the Advisor, and the North Flag - two pieces that have moved out of the collection.

Suffice it to say, when it comes to Tudor, I like to think I have an open mind.

Courtesy of Tudor

The Cellini Moonphase is dope (that means good). And way back in the day Rolex offered up a now legendary moonphase watch.

Courtesy of Tudor
I applaud Tudor for looking to evolve, but in truth this is one that I just don't get...

But to quote the Poet Laureate of New York City - Mr. Lou Reed:

"And just remember, different people have peculiar taste"

Some basics - the case is of stainless steel and measures 39 mm in diameter. The movement is the Calibre T607-9. It is rated to be water proof to 100 meters.

On the positive side? Very reasonably priced at $2,800.

What I Don't Necessarily Need...But I Desperately Want!

Courtesy of Lip

So Lip is lately full of surprises! Although it's a bit big for my wrist, I am now officially obsessed ; )

If my viewing of Chef's Table - Legends is correct, a large Blancpain wall clock hangs on the wall of the French Laundry. Under the clock are the words: Sense of Urgency

Courtesy of Lip

And if I do manage to lay hands to one of these time machines from Lip I will likely put a similar message underneath.

A sense of urgency is, in fact, something we should all try to live with. We should not just drift through life waiting and hoping. Life is too short for hoping and waiting.

So for those of you with the same feeling, read on for the pertinents, straight from Besançon -

Where design redefines time

In 1974, LIP set out to break boundaries by inviting seven designers from outside the watchmaking world to reimagine its creations. The ambition was clear: to breathe fresh life into the brand after the social upheavals of 1973. A year later, in 1975, a daring new collection emerged — a bold departure that redefined the future of LIP. Among these visionary designs, one stood out and became truly iconic: the MACH 2000 chronograph, created by the celebrated designer Roger Tallon.

Today, in 2025, a new icon is born: a wall clock inspired by the emblematic design of the MACH 2000 chronograph watch face.

More than just a way to tell time, this clock transforms any space into a gallery of art, bringing a touch of elegance and originality to your interior.

Let this unique creation infuse your everyday life with an artistic dimension. With LIP, time itself becomes a true work of design.

Believe The HYPE!

Hayek to Trump - "I've got your tariff right here!"

WHAT IF...TARIFFS? From Swatch -

Courtesy of Swatch

Tragically (and I mean that sincerely), this is only available in Switzerland.

Here's the skinny straight from Swatch -

Courtesy of Swatch

WHAT IF...TARIFFS? features a square Bioceramic case and edge-to-edge biosourced glass that allows a side view of the watch’s dial. The blue square dial, complemented by an integrated biosourced strap, is adorned with glow-in-the-dark hands. The inversion of Arabic numerals 3 and 9 on the dial subtly references the number 39. Paired with the percentage symbol found on the battery cover, this inversion hints at the US tariffs imposed on Switzerland and the deeper narrative woven into the watch’s design.

When Nice Guys Finish First - The Transfer Window has Opened at JPress!

I am not, by nature, someone who believes in fate, timing, etc.,.

But every now and again, something happens that makes me question this viewpoint.

Courtesy of JPress

News (very welcome news) reached the North Shore offices of Henki Time that the founder of Rowing Blazers, Jack Carlson, has been appointed as Creative Director and President of JPress

Just last night, I was scrolling through various  websites, lamenting the ever shrinking amount of Ivy/Trad options. I mean, I literally had set aside a bit of coin with the intention of treating myself to a new blazer to celebrate my "newish" job (more about that later). And needless to say, I came away disappointed. In the time since Mr. Carlson left the party, there has been (in all honesty) a lack of fresh ideas in this space (Ivy/Trad).

So it was with more than a bit of a double-take when I read the full release that Jack Carlson would be taking the helm of one of America (and Japan's) most revered labels - JPress!

Here's the news, straight from the source:

J. Press is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Jack Carlson as Creative Director and President. The 38-year-old American designer will debut his first collection for the brand on Thursday, the first day of New York Fashion Week. “I grew up with J. Press,” says Carlson. “I used to go to the shop in Harvard Square, and many of the first shirts, ties, and sport coats I bought for myself were J. Press. This feels like coming home. I studied the classics (literally). Much of what J. Press does is almost sacred to me: the button-downs, the blazers, the khakis, the Shaggy Dogs. J. Press also has a colorful, slightly irreverent streak that resonates with me too. I want to celebrate all of that. And I plan to bring a renewed focus on Made-in-America, as well as England, Scotland, Canada, and Japan. J. Press is one of the only menswear brands of its size still making most of its products in the United States, the old fashioned way, in places many other brands have abandoned.” Previously, Carlson founded the brand Rowing Blazers and served as its Creative Director until selling to Tory Burch co-owners Burch Creative Capital in 2024. He also led the revival of several heritage brands, including Warm & Wonderful, a knitwear label beloved by Diana, Princess of Wales. He has designed collections in partnership with Gucci, Barbour, Beams, FILA, Umbro, Noah, La Veste, Target, and more. Carlson has also designed watches in collaboration with Tag Heuer, Seiko, Zodiac, and Tudor; luggage with Globe-Trotter and LeSportsac; and footwear with Sperry and Hunter. Carlson’s designs have been worn by David Byrne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Timothée Chalamet, Keith Richards, Chloë Sevigny, Russell Westbrook, Pete Davidson, Venus Williams, Chris Briney, Ronny Chieng, Emily Ratajkowski, and Prince Albert of Monaco. His pieces have appeared in films and television shows, including Saturday Night Live, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Gossip Girl, and The Crown. Carlson has an undergraduate degree from Georgetown and a doctorate from Oxford. A three-time member of the U.S. national rowing team, he is a World Championships bronze medalist and has won both the Head of the Charles and Henley Royal Regatta.

Big congratulations to Mr. Carlson!
And JPress? Get ready for greatness!

The OW OCEAN GRAPH MkII

Editor's Note - James Henderson (the "Henki" of Henki Time is the North American Representative for Ollech & Wajs), so this is just the facts - no opinions.
From Ollech & Wajs -

This is the latest release from Ollech & Wajs, a revised version of the Ocean Graph. Per OW:

Ollech & Wajs proudly introduces the Ocean Graph MkII, the latest evolution of one of the most iconic dive watches in history.

Originally launched in 1968 as a specialised instrument for recreational and professional divers, the Ocean Graph defined a new standard in ocean exploration. The reimagined Ocean Graph MkII fuses contemporary engineering, modern functionality, and the insight of Norwegian freediver Siri Østvold, whose vision helped refine the design for the demands of competitive free diver.

Courtesy of Ollech & Wajs

The MKII features an innovative multifunction GMT, Tide Tracking, Top Time & Dive bezel. It combines four different timing systems into one rotating bezel and is the first of its kind:

 - Tide Tracking Function: By aligning the bezel with the time of the last high tide (often set against the hour hand), you can determine when the next high and low tides will occur. This is a handy feature for a variety of ocean sports such as surfing, sailing, fishing, and snorkelling.

 - Top Time (Countdown / Elapsed Time) Function: This utility has been developed specifically for competitive free-divers. “Top Time” is a term used to describe the three-minute countdown a diver has to psychologically and physically prepare for a competition dive. Once T-3:00 minutes has been called by the judge, the diver’s buddy (or the diver themselves in training) will align the bezel’s zero marker with the minute hand, and track elapsed time leading up to the dive.

 - GMT: A 12-hour GMT allows you to track two different time zones at once - ideal for those who travel to compete in the world’s oceans.

 - 20-minute Dive scale: allows divers to record elapsed time precisely during the first 15–20 critical minutes of a dive.

The Watch

The Yukihira Black Gradation Dial is a limited release of 77 pieces. This exquisite model showcases the pinnacle of Japanese craftsmanship through a dial created via electroforming—an intricate process that captures a subtle Yukihira pattern and finishes it with a deep black gradation that reveals hints of purple under shifting light. The dial ring is finished in ion-plated black, with the drill mark—Minase’s signature—polished to a brilliant silver shine with the sallaz finishing technique. The iconic case, with its 7 sapphire glass windows, offers a 360° view of the dial and movement.

Celebrating Japan

Since its creation in 2005, Minase has had two goals: creating timepieces that will still be revered a century from now and paying tribute to their home country’s rich heritage, culture and crafts. With a deep respect for traditional techniques and an unrelenting drive to innovate, the brand has developed and mastered signature elements such as the case-in-case structure or the sallaz polishing technique, earning global recognition across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia.
