But I suspect, and hope that you drop by Tempus Fugit to find out about what else is going on in the world of watches.

The Regulator Classic

From Chronoswiss -

Courtesy of Chronoswiss
While the new, more exotic regulators from Chronoswiss are quite compelling, this morning I was feeling a wee-bit nostalgic, and thought it might be nice to look at a Chronoswiss model that, in a sense, helps bridge the gap between the first Chronoswiss regulators and the latest and greatest.

I have always been a fan of the "coin edge" finish to the classic Chronoswiss cases, and that nod to the past is there, while a slightly updated dial and hand set keep things in the here and now.

The Case measures 40 mm and is of stainless steel. The movement is self-winding, designated as the Caliber C. 291 Automatic with a power reserve listed at 38 hours.

The AIRSPEED Part 3

As promised, here is where we get down to the more salient details and try get beyond emotions.

And what that generally comes down to is - how did the watch perform?  Truth be told, a watch can look like a million bucks, but if it does not perform well, it becomes a mechanical bracelet rather than a time keeper.  So the good news is that the besides looking really cool, wearing really comfortably, and making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside - this watch IS THE SHIT THAT KILLED ELVIS!

And by this watch, I really mean these watches -

With a prototype, you are never 100% sure how the watch will perform, but these two little bijouxs performed flawlessly. The winding action was incredibly smooth, the setting precise, and the time keeping spot-on.

Under the hood, the Miyota 8219 sets the pace.  This was a fantastic choice and if provides a high performance/high quality ratio that is very, very reassuring to anyone considering this watch for themselves.

The straps and buckles were - at least for me - the perfect balance for these watches.  And the little details like the black and red stitching provide a wonderful visual aspect.  The straps are phenomenally comfortable, yet plenty strong.

So for the very accessible price of $329 for the lowest Kickstarter pledge amount, you could not only have a fantastic watch, but experience what I have on more than one occasion these past few weeks while checking out at Trader Joe's or walking down the street -

"What a cool watch!  Were did you get it?"

Here are the pertinents -

Case Diameter: 43.0 mm
Case Thickness: 10.0 mm
Lug Width: 20.0 mm
Case Material: Hesalite Crystal
Movement: Miyota Caliber 8219
Dial: PVD Coating with Super-LumiNova (Pilot Ver. Only)
Water Resistance: 3 ATM (30 m)

And a reminder - here is the Kickstarter page:

The AIRSPEED - Part 2

What if someone reached inside of your head, grabbed out all of the cool things you had seen in your life, and combined them into a watch?

For me, that is what the CJR Airspeed represents to a great extent. So this part of the review/preview is not really from the rational/logical sphere. It is primarily based on emotion. That neuron that is triggered or pulled when you see something and it transports you to a different place and time. The case itself is crazy, but in the best possible way. It is, essentially, a very small stainless steel center part that is seemingly encased in one large watch crystal.

Spoiler alert - it isn't, but it sure looks that way. Almost as if the watch itself was floating in a crystal attached to your wrist.  The visual impact is also tactile owing to the curved shape of the bottom crystal which pairs perfectly with the domed top crystal.

And to say that the AIRSPEED is comfortable on the wrist is an understatement.  It sits nicely on the wrist and smiles back up at the wearer -

The curvature of the lugs, and their unique shape add to the futuristic look and feel of the AIRSPEED.  But in addition, there are the color codes.  The red and green accents on the dials, and the seemingly floating rings of color on both the top and bottom of the case.  Red for the beige Vintage version, and  green for the black Pilot version.  My suspicion is that these are gaskets.  So you have the sense of being able to see through the watch itself, even more so than the typical display back or skeleton dial.

As I said, this is a watch that triggers memories or images from other places and times.  Here is a checklist that went through my mind:

1.  The Atomium in Brussels -

Shamelessly borrowed from the INFOWEB

2.  Speed Racer -

Shamelessly borrowed from the INFOWEB

3. The Atmos Clock -

And plenty more, but that gives you an idea.

So that's the emotional side. Tomorrow we get down to brass tacks. As a reminder, the Kickstarter project can be found here:

Worth Saving

Back from the Spa is my family's old clock. Approximately 2 weeks later, doors glued and repaired, mechanism serviced, and ready to be packed to head to our new home on the North Shore.

As a reminder, these were the before images -

So always hang on to these things you have in your cellar, attic, backyard shed ; )

New England Clock Rescue Project

It is safe to say, that I grew up with this clock in our living room on Oak Street.  My mother had bought it at a furniture store between Oberlin (where we lived) and Elyria (where my father worked), Ohio.

This clock has been a lot of places, and when she died the clock stayed with her husband who, regrettably, did not treat it very well.

As you probably understand, a wooden clock is both a clock and a piece of furniture, and the wood needs to be treated with care.  Unfortunately these finer points were not exactly followed.

And it is somewhat ironic to consider that this clock was made in Connecticut, was purchased in Ohio, moved back east to Massachusetts, then to Pennsylvania and is now here in California where it will hopefully be brought back to working condition here. Before it moves, with us, back to Massachusetts when we move in March ; )

Not quite the Red Violin, but quite a journey nonetheless.

I will keep you posted.

WW15: MAÎTRE CABINOTIER Perpetual Calendar Regulator, an Original Display for a One-off Watch

From Vacheron Constantin -

MAÎTRE CABINOTIER PERPETUAL CALENDAR REGULATOR AN ORIGINAL DISPLAY FOR A ONE-OFF WATCH

Courtesy of Vacheron Constantin

Here's the scoop - straight from Geneva -

With the one-of-a-kind Maître Cabinotier Perpetual Calendar Regulator, Vacheron Constantin showcases its expertise in creating original and exclusive calibers providing a highly specific time read-off. This exceptional timepiece is distinguished by its regulator-type display, inspired by the precision clocks used to adjust watches from the 17th century onwards. Along with this dissociated display of the hours and minutes, the 2460 RQP movement specially designed for this model also drives a major horological complication: the perpetual calendar. An elegant hand-guilloché dial accentuates the exclusive nature of this watch certified by the Hallmark of Geneva, crafted in keeping with the spirit of the 18th century Geneva cabinotiers.
Presented as part of Vacheron Constantin’s Maître Cabinotier collection composed of exclusive timepieces, the Perpetual Calendar Regulator watch features a specific regulator-type time display. Its mechanical self-winding movement, Caliber 2460 RQP, was developed, designed and assembled by the master-watchmakers of the Manufacture so as to offer a distinctive reading of the hours and minutes that effectively complements the perpetual calendar functions. The dissociated indication of the hours and minutes, ensuring immediate legibility, is inspired by the regulator-type clock that were used to adjust watches from the late 17th century onwards. Also called “master clocks”, these high-precision timekeeping instruments served as a point of reference in the watchmaking workshops and astronomical observatories of the time. An elegant hand-guilloché dial, reflecting the expertise faithfully passed on from generation to generation at Vacheron Constantin since 1755, endows the Maître Cabinotier Perpetual Calendar Regulator with a subtle aura of refinement, while its meticulous finishing enhances the perfect clarity of the indications. Created in a one-off edition, this prestigious timepiece harks back to the tradition of technical excellence and innovation cultivated by the 18th century cabinotiers. These highly specialised Geneva artisans in their attic workshops created authentic made-to-order masterpieces intended for prestigious customers from around the world. In harmony with this blend of horological prowess and extreme personalisation, the art perpetuated through the Maître Cabinotier Collection by Vacheron Constantin is reflected in the highly exclusive production of its “Atelier Cabinotiers” which creates bespoke Haute Horlogerie watches.

Precision and legibility at the heart of a distinctive display

Born of the expertise nurtured by the master-watchmakers of the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin, this unique creation features a characteristic display of the hours and minutes, inspired by the
regulator clocks that first appeared in the 17th century. With the Maître Cabinotier Perpetual Calendar Regulator model, Vacheron Constantin reinterprets this characteristic layout in an exquisitely refined contemporary spirit. The gold dial adorned with an opaline brown finish and a hand-guilloché motif provides a dissociated reading of time, swept over by slender leaf-type hands, “clous de Paris” hour-markers and Roman numerals. The fine guilloché pattern, epitomising the savoir-faire and creativity cultivated by Vacheron Constantin the domain of artistic crafts, calls for finishing work that is up to four times longer to perform and more demanding than on traditional dials. Complementing the regulator-type display of the hours and minutes, the perpetual calendar and the moon phases appear on a snailed counter at 6 o’clock, while the pink gold moon and silver dust stars are sprinkled across this gently spiralling finish. The pink gold-rimmed day of the week and month apertures appear on either side of the offset hours counter at 12 o’clock. The various types of finish – guilloché, opaline, snailed and circular satin-finished – along with the alternating presence of applied hour-markers, Roman and Arabic numerals, combine to ensure excellent readability of each separate indication. This distinctively designed dial frames a 42 mm-diameter pink gold case that is water-resistant to 30 metres and topped by a concave bezel that accentuates the overall impression of slenderness.

New dedicated Vacheron Constantin caliber
Combining sophisticated technical content, contemporary design and delicate touches of artistic craftsmanship, the Maître Cabinotier Perpetual Calendar Regulator houses an exceptional mechanical heart. The new Caliber 2460 RQP was specially designed and developed by the master- watchmakers of the Manufacture in order to provide a regulator-type display of the hours and minutes. These indications are driven by a complex mechanism and the combination of complexity and original hour display has become an authentic brand signature. Its inherent originality is enriched by one of the most prestigious horological complications: the perpetual calendar, indicating the day of the week, the month, the date, leap years and moon phases. Comprising 334 carefully decorated components, this exclusive ‘motor’ beats at the frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and ensures a 40-hour power reserve.
The aura of natural distinction exuded by this timepiece is matched by an alligator Mississippiensis leather strap in a shade echoing that of the brown dial. Hand-sewn and featuring large square scales, it is fastened by a triple-blade pink gold folding clasp adorned with a polished half Maltese Cross.
Building on its originality and its technical refinement, the Maître Cabinotier Perpetual Calendar Regulator by Vacheron Constantin joins an exceptional collection of unique creations that are much sought-after among collectors.
