12 Days of Christmas - in 2 Blog Posts!

Okay, it is that time of year.  Now unless you're talking about a SWATCH, or perhaps a 3thirty3 ; )  watches and other expensive luxury items are not generally what I tend to think of as Christmas/Holiday gifts (sorry to disappoint you gentle readers), but having said that here are the 12 things that I'd plump for if money was no object, so herein my personal 12 Days of Christmas part the first -

A Few Minutes with Carlo and Samuel Naldi

One of the nicest parts about this little "bloggy-wog" is it has offered me the opportunity to meet a lot of people I never would have.  Two such people are Carlo and Samuel Naldi, the father and son team behind Edelberg.  And as today is Father's Day, it seemed an appropriate topic.  And now, a few minutes with two gentlemen that I am proud to call my friends - Carlo and Samuel Naldi.

Carlo and Samuel Naldi
Tempus Fugit -  Carlo - how did you get started in the Pen/Luxury business?

Carlo Naldi - I have been a pen aficionado from a young age.

The subject of pens themselves does not interest me as such.  My interest really lies in  the purpose for which the pen was invented, to communicate and share ideas between people and to leave an indelible mark in history.

My passion for archaeology was born out of my love of writing, and therefore my work with objects used for writing is a way for me to perpetuate an art that should not be forgotten by future generations; the art of calligraphy.

Tempus Fugit - Why pens of all things?

Carlo Naldi - The pen can be a luxury item, but above all else it is an object that shows the love that a person has for writing, communicating and a pen symbolizes the love that a person has for culture.

Samuel Naldi

Tempus Fugit - Samuel, had you always planned to work in the "family" business?

Samuel Naldi - Obviously my parents had built something with the idea that one day their children would take care of the business for the future.  In my case it happened quite fast after my experience at working at Embassy in Lucerne.  This gave me the opportunity to face a lot of hard challenges despite my young age.  In those four years I’ve had the chance to feel how nice it is to achieve dreams when you work hard and also to take risks that are part of the game when you are an entrepreneur.

Carlo Naldi

Tempus Fugit - Carlo, where did you grow up?  What brought you to Zug?

Carlo Naldi - My father, Ugo, worked for the Italian government in Switzerland.  I grew up on the border between Italy and Switzerland, in Ticino, the Italian speaking part of Switzerland.

After completing my studies in business, I started to learn German in Germany, then German speaking Switzerland.  I  then settled down for 13 years in Lausanne where Samuel and Keren, my children were born.  We have now lived in Zug in central Switzerland for 13 years.  Zug is a fast-growing area, strategically ideal for our business activities.

Tempus Fugit - Samuel, what did you do before joining the family business?

Samuel Naldi - I worked at Embassy in Lucerne.  Embassy is a premier watch store located at the Grendelstrasse.  At Embassy, I learned a lot about marketing, timepieces and luxury thanks to mentors such as Beat Weinmann (now at ochs und junior) and Patrik König.

Tempus Fugit - Carlo, your two signature pen collections (the Tachys and the Sloop) are fairly different.  What was the inspiration for each of these pens?

Carlo Naldi- Edelberg is a brand born from a passion for writing and calligraphy, but not only that…

At its heart, Edelberg was born from the love of beauty, style and excellence.
As a Swiss company, and working in close vicinity of the watchmaking world, we are particularly attracted by the ideals of being "SWISSMADE" but we also closely identify with the watchmaking quality that Switzerland is famous for.

We therefore wanted to design a product with strong technical characteristics, a product that is "SWISSMADE", and is very connected to the world of watchmaking.
The Sloop product is very innovative and contemporary,

Edelberg Sloop

while the Tachys wants to be more classic and discrete keeping that dynamic touch that differs it from other products.
Edelberg Tachys

Tempus Fugit - What makes Edelberg so special?

Samuel Naldi -  That’s something that I normally like to let our friends and customers answer. Edelberg is a brand that pursues excellence, innovation and beauty. And this is what we would like to transmit to our customers - the feeling of an item that is stylish and qualitative.  In the meantime, one of the most important things is that we want to give VALUE.  Value can be defined as brand value but also through exclusivity and restricted quantities.   In addition the hand made work that goes into our items give the customers the value of a "One of a Kind" piece. All of these features can usually be found in both our Regular and Limited Editions.
In the End our customer should have an item that inspires and excites him daily!

Tempus Fugit - You have come up with some very interesting limited editions and collaborations.  Can you tell us about some of them?

Samuel - Last year we had presented the Animal Prints and the Bespoke Collection.
The first one is inspired to the World of Animals.

Animals have great energy and power and mean a lot to people. So we basically wanted to take this force and reproduce it in a writing instrument. In addition to that, we also said, that we are not going to use Animals to generate Sales without giving back. This is why every Pen donates an amount of 20 CHF to an association that Helps Endangered Species. (the Panthera Tigris donates to 21st Century Tiger). Every year a new Edition is presented.

The Bespoke Collection

The Bespoke Collection takes the idea of clothing, fabrics and patterns. Patterns are such a marvelous thing. They decorate and give character to seemingly ordinary items.  With that in mind, last year we created and presented the Pied de Poule and Gessato Edition.  This year another "cult-fabric" has been chosen.  We selected denim to create our the newest member of the Bespoke Collection - Blue Jeans!

At Baselworld 2014 we presented a special collaboration with Chronopassion, one of the Leader in the Retail of Watches.

Chronopassion

With Laurent we have created an "Artistic-Horological" pen for the watch-enthusiast - a limited, hand-painted series of 88 pieces worldwide that was created by the Spanish Artist Alvaro Soler.

The future will bring other interesting and sexy collaborations with brands and houses that are leaders and innovators in their sectors.

Tempus Fugit - Carlo, what many people don't know is that there are several charitable initiatives that Edelberg is involved in - can you tell us about some of your partnerships?

Carlo - Edelberg loves to give back. We are priviled to live a life where we can’t really complain about anything, and we have everything we need to live well and in peace.  Having said hat, we know that it’s not the same for other people. This is why we love to give something that helps other people to live better, feel better and maybe face life more positively.

Tempus Fugit - Samuel, The Polio Watch - this is something that everyone has been talking about - can you tell us more about it and Edelberg's involvement?

Samuel Naldi - The Polio Watch is a great Project that was started by the Time to Act Foundation.  A good friend of ours, Marc Alfieri, contacted us and explained the whole Project.  Basically Marc created a beautifully designed watch, with a quite interesting electronic mechanism, stainless steel case, for 480€.   Of that, Euro 370€ goes to pay the production of the watch.  The other 110€ goes directly to the Foundation.  So that you have an idea of how powerful a contribution that is, 110€  will pay for 250 doses of vaccine.

Edelberg participates as an Official Partner and we have customized an edition with dark blue details.  Basically, we are helping promote the project and to give maximum exposure to this great initiative.

Tempus Fugit - So what is the next big thing for Edelberg?

Samuel Naldi - The Keyword for what we do will still be:  "Contamination".
Contamination is a mix of different worlds that in the end brings you excellent products with facets that attire different kinds of people.  Basically this is what we want: We want to be inspired by the world of tailoring, watches, engineering, nature, animals, writing instruments, art and sport.

This will lead us to create exclusive items not only in the world of writing instruments but also other luxury items.

Wrongs Getting "Righted"

It was a pleasant surprise to have last year's Writing Wrongs Award on hand with this year's winner! Last year Fonderie 47 was the winner and Peter Thum came by to wish this year's winner well - Marc Alfieri.  Marc was selected this year for his work on the Polio Watch.
Left to right: Samuel Naldi, Peter Thum, James Henderson, Marc Alfieri, Carlo Naldi

So the big question is -
Who will win next year?

Stay tuned!

Friday, March 28, 2014

And the Winner is...

Well, Edelberg have done it again with another great Writing Wrongs award - this year's winner was Marc Alfieri for his work on the Polio Watch.

I had the good fortune to bump into him and this year's guest speaker for the Writing Wrongs award, fellow blogger Max Reddick yesterday.

Needless to say, I think he likes the pen ; )

Bravo Carlo, Samuel, Max - and in particular Marc!

So the only question is, who will be next year's winner?

A Great Pen for a Great Cause!

Edelberg Animal Prints - Panthera Tigris
 The call of the wild

Edelberg is proud to announce its latest collection of precision writing instruments - Animal Prints.

Based on the now iconic Sloop model, Edelberg's Animal Prints collection celebrates the beautiful and dynamic creatures that share our planet.  Bold patterns artfully displayed upon a perfectly balanced, hand crafted writing instrument.

A very limited edition of Animal Prints will be released each year.

Animal Prints from Edelberg  - It's a jungle out there, embrace it!

Panthera Tigris

Panthera Tigris is the first in the Animal Prints collection.   Inspired by the mystery, strength and beauty of the largest cat species on the planet, Luca Roccaforte's design for the Panthera Tigris has captured the spirit of this magnificent animal.

But we wanted to do something more - and so we are very proud to announce that a portion of each Panthera Tigris pen purchased will be donated to an organization devoted to the preservation of tigers - 21st Century Tiger.  Protecting our natural world, and in particular protecting tigers is a simple question of ethics.

The number of Panthera Tigris pens is limited to 46 - 46 in recognition of the number of articles in the Swiss law created for the protection of animals.

Painstakingly handcrafted in resin, the noble pattern of the tiger has been applied using aerographic techniques. The Panthera Tigris measures 14.9cm (5.9 inches), and it's perfectly balanced to ensure that your ideas flow as beautifully as the tiger it is named for.

Limited to only 46 pieces worldwide, the Panthera Tigris will only be available to a very limited group of collectors.

Edelberg will release a new Animal Print each year, with the Panthera Tigris being the first in a very limited series.

Available from October 2013

It Must be the Shoes - Part Deux

It's easy to overdose on watches at BaselWorld.  So after worshipping from afar, I finally got to check out some Ilmia shoes "in the flesh".  The brand owner, Christian Gafner was kind enough to visit me at the Naldi's area for Edelberg and he brought some Ilmia shoes.

BaselWorld - It's a Jungle IN THERE!

So it seems clear that the folks at Edelberg don't like to sit back and wait for trends. They like to set them!

An Open Letter to the Watch Industry Executives

Dear Watch Industry Executives,

I write this letter tonight from Lucerne, Switzerland to inform you of the third phase of the Tempus Fugit Initiative.  The first phase is the Edelberg Writing Wrongs award which was presented this past Thursday to Fonderie 47.

The second phase is a partnership with a wonderful watch brand and a very worthy charitable organization which I will give more background on in the coming days.

But to quote my old grand dad - sometimes you have to put your fear of failure to one side, and dare to try and move the world (even in a small way) so here is my best effort:

Let's work together to end human trafficking.  And believe it or not, my request to you is small in terms of your commitment.  I am challenging every watch brand out there who feels that they can afford it, to select one model or product family, and commit 1% of the profits from the sales as a donation to a foundation to fight human trafficking.  Now, I know what you're thinking - WIFM?  (or as we used to say at Starbucks, What's in it for me?")  Well, to be honest, it is the chance to do something good for people who are helpless.  And maybe I need to put this more starkly -  what if it was your daughter or son?  Does it seem important to you now?

Now, having walked around BaselWorld and seeing the sheer scale of spending... no offense, you can afford it, and there is still an upside - charitable contributions help your tax situation ; )

I'm all in - who is with me?

You know where to reach me.

Sincerely,

James Henderson

The Pen Is Mightier!

I am very proud to announce the creation of a new award to recognize significant community contributions by members of the watch industry.  The ‘Writing Wrongs’ Award will be awarded for the first time on Thursday, April 25th at the EDELBERG booth in the Ramada at BaselWorld.

This past year, I announced the Tempus Fugit Initiative – a call to action for members of the watch industry to do more than merely write a check for a charitable contribution.  The goal of the Tempus Fugit Initiative is to help call attention to members of the watch industry who truly endeavor to change the lives of others in a positive, meaningful, and sustainable way.

I was joined in this mission by the father and son team behind EDELBERG Haute Manufacture, Carlo Naldi and his son Samuel.  Through their daily operations, they help prove that nothing is more powerful than an idea – even if sometimes that idea might need some help to express itself.  Carlo and Samuel recognized, as I do, that a story needs to be shared, and by sharing that story we can help people working to heal a broken world.  The Naldis share my sincere desire to give these actions a voice, and to prove that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.

This year we are very pleased to honor the work of Fonderie 47.  Fonderie 47 have set out on the rather daunting task of reducing the number of assault rifles and other small arms globally.  They have addressed this challenge by funding the destruction of over 30,000 assault rifles to-date.  In the process, they have dismantled these deadly machines and repurposed some of the components into beautiful pieces of jewelry and one of the most beguiling haute creations the world of horology has seen in some time: a watch they have named Inversion Principle.
Courtesy of Fonderie 47
The very idea of taking an AK47 and repurposing it into an object of beauty is amazing in and of itself – but considering that this enterprise serves to fund the destruction of even more weapons and you can understand how Fonderie 47 was the unanimous choice for the inaugural ‘Writing Wrongs’ Award.
Courtesy of Fonderie 47
Inversion Principle, the new timepiece by Fonderie 47 announced earlier this year, was designed by Adrian Glessing, and developed and produced by David Candaux of Du Val Des Bois exclusively for Fonderie 47.   Peter Thum, who is a pioneer in this field, heads Fonderie 47.  Inversion Principle is a mechanical marvel with features including a jumping hour complication, a retrograde minutes display, a 3-minute flying tourbillon, and 2 power reserve indicators.  Available in white or red gold, and limited to 10 pieces of each color, each timepiece funds the destruction of 1,000 assault rifles in Africa upon purchase.   And to commemorate the transformation of weapon to time keeping wonder, a small piece of the metal recovered from a destroyed AK47 is employed to cap the ratchet wheel and can be viewed through the display back.

We welcome you to join us in honoring Fonderie 47 on Thursday, April 25th at 5:00 PM.  No RSVP required – just a desire to change the world!

Style Icons - the Naldis

When I first started this little blog, the inspiration was the Sartorialist - www.thesartorialist.com and what Coco Channel said, that in essence she didn't want to be some thing, she wanted to be some body.    I try to look to that ideal in watch making (and related disciplines) when writing my daily musings.

And when I think about living your life and being "you" I think of the Naldis - at least the two Naldis I know - Carlo and his son Samuel.
Carlo Naldi
Yes, I've lived in Tokyo, Europe, and the US.  I think I'm pretty sophisticated - massive miscalculation when I travel to Europe and am re-acquainted with what sophistication really is.  Carlo and his son are he real deal - and I am encouraging the Sartorialist to come and check them out.

Samuel Naldi
I am, a bumbling Northern Youth (albeit a not so youthful one) - hoping to shed some insight into watches, fashion and "what's it", and I have to say that the Naldis embody fashion, and form and LUXURY.  But not in the way that luxury is exclusive, or a private club that you are not allowed to join.  No, the Naldis are warm, friendly and some of the nicest people you will ever meet.  And they have an eye for beauty and quality which has allowed them to create some of the most beautiful pens that you may ever be lucky enough to write with.  And the price of admission to the Naldi's club?  A good heart, an appreciation for beauty and an open mind.  Seems pretty fair to me.  Because the Naldis understand something important - it's about people.

The Pen is Mightier...

BaselWorld never fails to hold at least one surprise for me, this past year there were several, not the least of which was a pen company!

This is one of Edelberg's newest creations - a collaboration with Artya.  They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and in this case they may well be right.
