MIDO ON MONDAY - The Commander, The Watch Of The Future

While MIDO has several watch families, one of the most deceptively innovative is the Commander.

Courtesy of Mido
Now at first blush, the Commander looks like a pretty basic watch.  There are a few design touches that are definitely "of a time".  Chief among these being the Milanese bracelet that seemingly disappears into the case itself.

Courtesy of Mido
It is quite a clever design, born years ago, but still quite effective.

But the real genius of the Commander is, in fact, pretty basic.  The case.  The case is a monocoque construction.  Simply put?  To service the watch, you go through the front, because without the aid of a diamond tipped can opener, you are not going through the back ; )

Another quirky bit of MIDO esoterica was their use of what was known as the "Aquadura" system.

Courtesy of Mido

Essentially, a cork sealing system.  Now it's important to understand that this was not unique to the Commander, but that little extra "what's it" made the Commander perhaps one of the most impregnable, durable and dependable mechanical watches of its time.  Now granted, a lot of watch makers couldn't get their heads around the notion that you didn't go in through the back, and my father's MIDO bore the scars of such uninformed work.  But in so many ways, this was THE ULTIMATE watch.  Durable, good looking, and reliable.

I have a few feelers out to lay hands to some vintage versions, and am reaching out to MIDO to see if a review of the modern version might be possible, so stay tuned.

The Urban Day Date

From Meistersinger -

Courtesy of Meistersinger
Okay, a bit of little known Henki lore:

Once upon a time, Wendy and I were living in San Francisco.  I had  a little surprise windfall and wanted to buy a new watch.  And Francis Z. at Seregin's sold me on a hand-wound MeisterSinger watch - the one with the cream colored dial.

In purchasing it, I am fairly confident that I was THE very first MeisterSinger owner in the US.  Round about the same time, my mother fell ill, I had to drop my job and fly to Massachusetts to look after her in her final weeks.  I was lucky, I was able to find a new job (at a dramatically lower wage) and had to sell off my meager collection of two watches - an Omega Seamaster, and my Meistersinger.

That was a long time ago, but I have had a bit of an aching feeling ever since.  And in fairness, I realize that sounds silly.  Yes, it was a favorite, but not a family heirloom.  But in letting the watch go, I was also crossing the line from being the child to being the care giver.  Being the younger to being the older generation.  At the time I felt that I was just doing what needed to be done, what a good son was supposed to do.  But in many ways, I was leaving behind a part of my life and entering a new one.  What felt like turning a page was really ending the first volume and starting the sequel.  Seeing the Urban Day Date has definitely stirred something in me, and maybe it's time to embrace this next phase.

At any rate, for now I will check my piggy bank, as the Urban Day Date is now pulling those visceral strings!

Pontos Day/Date from Maurice Lacroix

Another BaselWorld Preview from Maurice Lacroix-
Courtesy of Maurice Lacroix
The best-selling watch in the Pontos Collection, the emblematic profile of the Day/Date model is now
available with either a black or two-tone dial to enhance readability. Its deep, radiant finish emphasizes its
functions, underlines its timeless elegance and confirms its distinguished character.

Under the sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, the demeanor is stately. The domed
dial is marked out by applied indexes in pink gold with imposing outlines. Their tips highlighted by
luminescent material seem to clamor for attention. The faceted hour and minute hands, also tipped with
Superluminova, seem only too eager to comply. They follow their course over a somber backdrop,
illuminated by a radiant, sun-brushed finish that seems enhance the size of the dial thanks to its majestic
brilliance.

A date aperture maintains a very discreet presence at 6 o'clock. The day of the week is displayed at the
other side of the dial in an arching semi-circle. The two indications are daily accomplices in recording the
passage of time. They are each revealed by a section cut out from the surrounding mass, forming their
own small niche and providing esthetically-pleasing contrast on the dial.

The 40 mm diameter case holds its own with alternating finishes. There is a subtle alternation of polished
and satin finishes, the former reflecting the light, the latter capturing it, in a quest for classical refinement
that extends even to the choice of the ML143 caliber, recognized for its impressive efficiency and
reliability.

For lovers of fine watchmaking with memories of the chronographs of yesteryear, a retro design with a
vintage look is also available. On a black or silvered dial, the rail-track pattern for following the seconds
indication is highlighted in red and blue in a truly classic style, thus matching the metallic blue of the
seconds hand.
