OMEGA - I know you've dropped me like a "hot potato", no calls, emails, carrier pigeon messages or smoke signals. BUT - this is a good initiative, it is drawing attention to an important cause, and frankly it is an important story.
So in the spirit of recognizing good corporate citizenship, here is the news straight from the OMEGA press site -
Together with the GoodPlanet Foundation, OMEGA has begun two environmental conservation programs in the North and South Sulawesi regions of Indonesia.
OMEGA is proud to announce its involvement in “Time for the Planet“, an initiative that includes two environmental conservation projects on Tanakeke Island and in Bahoi in Indonesia. In partnership with Yann Arthus-Bertrand and the GoodPlanet Foundation, the brand is taking steps to protect our oceans and underwater ecosystems and to help the people that rely on them the most by funding two three-year projects focused on educating the local communities, managing the regions’ natural heritage and creating protected marine areas.
In 2012, OMEGA produced an award-winning documentary titled Planet Ocean. The 90-minute film was directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and Michael Pitiot and, after making its debut at the Rio+20 Earth Summit, it was shown to audiences at exclusive OMEGA-hosted events all around the world, including a special screening at the United Nations in New York. In addition to these viewings, public Planet Ocean exhibitions were set up in four major cities in order to share with a wider audience the beauty of our oceans, the dangers they face and what we can all do to help save them.
Now OMEGA has begun the next step in its environmental conservation endeavours by taking action.
“When OMEGA asked me how it could be involved [in Indonesia], GoodPlanet and I were overjoyed because it meant our project would go ahead and that we could put into practice what we had planned to do,” Yann Arthus-Bertrand says of OMEGA’s involvement in “Time for the Planet”.
President of OMEGA Stephen Urquhart described the importance of the project, saying, “We are proud to be a part of these remarkable projects and to have supported a film that shows how we can all help contribute to the health of the oceans, the source of all life on Earth.”
Tanakeke Island
The project on Indonesia’s Tanakeke Island is based on advancing scientific knowledge and teaching the local population, including the younger generation, how to protect its natural resources. Following the aquaculture boom in the 1990s, Tanakeke Island lost 70% of its mangroves, greatly reducing the local biodiversity. Using a participative community approach, OMEGA and GoodPlanet aim to help regenerate the ecosystem and guide the community toward autonomous sustainable management of its island and its coastline.
Bahoi
Centred on respecting biodiversity, the three-year project in Bahoi, Indonesia encourages the protection of the coastal village’s ecosystems by creating a network of Marine Protected Areas that, in time, will be managed by the communities themselves. The goal of this project in the Northern Sulawesi region is to develop eco-tourism and to increase awareness among community members of the importance of their natural resources and how to live sustainably.

In 2011, OMEGA formed a partnership with the GoodPlanet Foundation and its founder, Yann Arthus-Bertrand. Together, the environmental organization and OMEGA help raise awareness of environmental issues, encourage sustainable development and promote the idea that the health of our planet is a responsibility shared by everyone on Earth.
