Sometimes people do some stupid things. Alexander Hamilton was a brilliant man (who did have difficulty keeping his "affections" in check), and probably was one of the most influential people in the newly born United States. Aaron Burr (who is one of my family's forbearers) was smart enough, and certainly savvy. He well understood that politics was a game of many turns - not unlike chess. Through a series of disputes (and possible) misunderstandings, one thing led to another, and things got out of hand - as things so often do. As this dispute pre-dated E TV and blogging, it became an affair of honor, and the gentleman met at Weehawken, New Jersey for an "interview".
Long story short, Hamilton missed (intentionally?) his shot. Mr. Burr leveled his pistol, and hit the mark, leaving the country short of two great (if somewhat misguided) leaders. And my family with the reminder that your emotions can get the better of you, and a painful reminder to Mr. Hamilton that if you don't want to get shot, it's best not to engage in a duel.
But this is about Guy Fawkes Day - or bonfire night. While everyone loves Kate and William, the same couldn't always be said for the British monarchy. Mr. Fawkes was left (somewhat) holding the bag - or more precisely, guarding the explosives that were planned to blow up the House of Lords. Some might say he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but again it reminds us that perhaps violence isn't the best path, and if we take the time to think things fully through, perhaps we can achieve our goals without blowing people up - or in current terms, destroying property in Oakland (occupy Oakland).
Okay - but enough of that, let's talk about watches - with UK Origins!
From the nice folks at Bremont - the ALT1-P
This is Graham's Silverstone Tourbillograph Steel
And last, but by no means least - Arnold & Son's True Moon.
So with all the fuss in the world right now, a friendly reminder - keep your cool!
And on Guy Fawkes Day - keep your powder dry!
