To be fair, the inspiration for this entry is largely influenced by Anthony Bourdain's latest - Medium Raw (which I HIGHLY recommend), and is also a summation of nearly a year spent on the other side of the Watch Business's Public Relations arena.
For those of you recently tuning in from other programs, until April of last year I was working for DOXA Watches in North America handling sales, marketing and Public Relations. I started the blog as a way to hopefully get back to what was fun in the watch business in the first place, the people behind the watches - a little human interest if you will.
It is important to understand that this little "bloggy-wog" does not generate any money. It is, as they say, a labor of love. This means a 5:30 AM wake up to check messages, edit interviews, reply to requests, and do some actual writing. A quick clean-up, and then off to the office - yes, this is NOT my day job! If I am lucky, home by 5:30 or 6:00, do some fact checking, etc., dinner and then possibly a SKYPE conference with a European or Asian contact before bed. And the next day I am at it again. So I have really come to know, and appreciate the people at the companies who help make this happen.
So today, and in the coming entries, I will do my best to give some feedback. I haven't decided whether or not to go into "Villains" per-se, but let's talk about some of the heroes -
Dimitra Frechelin is a HERO in capital letters! I have yet to have an email go unanswered, or a request for information ignored. If the mad scientists at a certain large luxury goods conglomerate could find a way to clone her, they would really rule the watch world (instead of simply acting as if they did). Dimitra, and her colleague Xavier Markl have constantly gone above and beyond to help with interviews, product reviews - and even a much needed coffee at BaselWorld!
Gabriela Von Malaisé is another hero. With the attention to detail and the follow-through of a trained journalist, she is also one of the best communicators out there! To spend time with her and Thomas Morf you will completely understand why Hanhart is going to be one of the real success stories in the coming years. They understand that this is a people business, first and foremost.
Michael Pearson - despite living in Detroit and being an Aston Villa supporter (really kidding Michael), has worked tirelessly to help build first Ernst Benz, and now Bremont here in North America. He is one of those "above and beyond" kind of guys. Having been on his side of the fence, I can tell you it is a job full of highs and lows, but Michael is always positive, and the Bremont flag is flying high. When the term "road warrior" was coined for people on the road working, I do not think they had Micheal in mind. He is far too nice, and way too positive! Let's hope that style catches on!
So those are some heroes, and while it would be easy to "call out" villains, I would rather leave it like this, recognizing the really good.
