What do you get when you take an aspiring jeweler and combine him with a peerless watch maker? You get Peter Speake-Marin.
Peter Speake-Marin was kind enough to send me some images of his Marin 1. This was a very nice thing for him to take the time to do considering his extended summer road trip through the US! You can read all about it on his Facebook page -

And in his own word, he had this to say about the Marin 1 -
These are some images of the Marin1 with caliber sm2. I have spent approx 3 years developing this caliber and it is entirely unique in its construction. It is not based upon any existing watch. Every jewel, screw, wheel, pinion, and spring is made for this watch including the balance and it is entirely hand finished in the valley de joux. The case is polished titanium and the dial made from hard enamel. It is a dream come true.

While it is easy to make the usual comparisons to Harrison or Arnold for ingenuity and craftsmanship, and well - "Britishness", I am also reminded of the passionate drive of Rupert Gould, the man who restored and in a very real sense saved Mr. Harrison's marine chronometers from oblivion.

While he could have have followed a safer path by working in the safe havens of already established ateliers and manufacturers, Mr. Speake-Marin has instead followed his own path and his watches are a very
beautiful reminder of the value and importance of following your dreams.
