Something new from Arnold & Son.  In all honesty, the keep cranking things out and releasing them, and I am starting to run out of enthusiasm. Having said that, this one is at least a wee bit different.

The Métiers d’Art HM Koi Unique Piece from Arnold & Son will appeal to watch connoisseurs who appreciate the finest-quality watchmaking combined with beautiful arts and crafts. The hand-painted miniature represents two koi swimming in harmony. This motif is inspired by the koi depicted in traditional ink-wash paintings. Through perseverance and endurance, the koi were able to become mythical beings.  The koi fish is part of many ancient legends. Legend has it that King Shoko of Ro presented Chinese philosopher Confucius a magoy, a black carp, as a gift at the birth of his first son in 533 B.C. So impressed was Confucius by the koi’s strength and ability to swim up the falls of the yellow river that he named his son after the fish. 

Two thousand years later and the koi fish still symbolizes positive attributes in life like perseverance, endurance and courage. 

The Métiers d’Art HM Koi Unique Piece from Arnold & Son was created to celebrate this fascinating fish. Adorning the mother-of-pearl dial is a hand-painted miniature of two koi, depicted in traditional Chinese ink-wash paintings. Nuances of colours, from red-orange to blue-grey, are achieved by the tiny brushstrokes and texturing gradually to build-up the entire image with an astonishing richness of details. Each koi is executed with exquisite delicacy of touch and features fine details that evoke its shimmering skin. The art of painting miniatures by hand calls for infinite patience and consummate skill. As Philippe Boven of Arnold & Son explains: “The art of hand-painting miniatures takes many years of concentrated practice to perfect, and these exquisite koi presented our specialists with an ideal opportunity to showcase their skills.” The sumptuousness of the koi is a counterpoint to the simplicity of the white mother-of-pearl dial, which shimmers entrancingly with the play of light and perfectly mirrors the water in which the koi live.

The sophisticated HM Perpetual Moon is, indeed, a superb example of Arnold & Son’s technical and artistic excellence. From the inside out, this new timepiece – with rich guilloché dials and three-dimensional big moon – surprises and delights. The 42 mm case is created in either 18-carat red gold or in stainless steel and houses the exclusive Arnold & Son mechanical hand-wound movement, the caliber A&S1512. The 27 jewel caliber offers one of the most accurate moon phases on the market, with only one day’s deviation every 122 years – at which point a single push on the corrector will keep it in sync for another 122 years. The caliber is also equipped with a double barrel to yield 80 hours of power reserve.

The exceptional perpetual moonphase indication of this watch is a marvel in many ways. From the aesthetic side, the 29 mm moonphase disc, which runs from 10 to 2 o’clock on the dial, reveals one of the largest moons on the market – with a diameter of 11.2 mm for the moon alone. Additionally, this large moon is one of the most visually stunning recreations of the moon because it is a three-dimensional sculptured moon that was first hand-engraved and then duplicated for the series. The sculptured moon is then inserted into the disc. 

From the technical side, in addition to the HM Perpetual Moon being so precise, it is also an intriguing complication in that it is not simply a module added to the movement, but, in fact, is fully integrated into the caliber. The watch also has a unique easy-to-set feature thanks to the ingenious addition of a second moon indication installed at the back of the movement. This second moon display, visible via a transparent case back, features a graduated dial and a pointer hand that allows for a more exact setting.

The multiple technological advancements in the caliber make this timepiece truly outstanding. To further underscore that, the entire rhodium treated nickel-silver movement features hand finishing indicative of the finest Haute Horlogerie timepieces, including manually chamfered bridges with polished edges, fine circular graining with polished edges and Côtes de Genève rayonnantes, and blued screws. The timepiece naturally features an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and case back to view the meticulous details.

Taking the HM Perpetual Moon to higher heights, Arnold & Son offers three very distinct versions for today’s discerning clientele. The Elegant model is created in 18- carat red gold with an incredible blue guilloché dial in a stylized sunray pattern, blue guilloché moon disc with golden stars and the hand-engraved moon. The Classic model, also crafted in 18-carat red gold, features a cream-colored dial with a blue guilloché moon disc with golden stars and the hand-engraved moon. The Modern model is created in stainless steel and features a black guilloché dial with black guilloché moon disc with the hand-engraved moon. The name HMS Victory is one of the best known in English maritime history. Her glorious career spanned forty years, during which she saw action in the American War of Independence, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic wars. It was in the latter that she enjoyed her finest hour as Lord Nelson’s flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Now, the HMS Victory Set from Arnold & Son presents three different views of the vessel, each traditionally hand-chased by Arnold & Son’s master engraver.

Arnold & Son’s own master engraver created the exquisite HMS Victory Set dials, which are then duplicated in silver for the series. Hand-engraving is a traditional art form that involves the use of hardened steel tools called burins in combination with other special tools. These create cuts, lines and texturing that build up entire images or, as in the case of this exclusive set of timepieces, perfectly sculpted scenes of the HMS Victory with a breathtaking richness of detail. The scenes in the HMS Victory Set give us three different views of the vessel: the first, resplendent in shafts of sunlight breaking through the clouds; the second, with guns ablaze as she rakes the French fleet; and the third, an interior of the ship, on one of the gun decks. The three-dimensional nature of these hand-engraved dials is accentuated by the engraver who then individually hand-tarnishes each final duplicated silver dial to provide all a spectacular illustration of this extraordinary ship with illusion of depth that contrasts starkly with the ultra-slim case.

All three models in the HMS Victory Set are powered by the A&S1001 calibre with haute horlogerie finishing. The movement is made of rhodium-plated nickel-silver and features hand-chamfered bridges with polished edges, fine circular graining andCôtes de Genève rayonnantes (radiating Geneva stripes), with blued screws.

The HMS Victory timepieces will be available firstly in an exclusive limited edition of just 28 sets, each consisting of the three timepieces. With a timepiece that references to John Arnold and his son's watchmaking heritage, Arnold & Son unveils the TBR featuring the hand-finished A&S6008 calibre. Conceived, designed and manufactured in-house, this superbly engineered wristwatch heralds a new collection - the Instrument Collection that combines instrument precision with classical styling.

The TBR is the first timepiece in the new Instrument Collection from Arnold & Son and features the first automatic movement with an integrated true beat system to be developed, designed and manufactured entirely at the workshops in La Chaux-de-Fonds. Its pure, timeless design takes its inspiration from the later instrument-style chronometers produced by John Roger Arnold. These answered the call for timepieces rugged and reliable enough to withstand the hardships of life on the high seas combined with the down-to-the-second precision needed by marine navigators to determine longitude.

With the unmistakable design cues that define the family, the TBR is a masterpiece of reduced simplicity. The initials stand for the watch's two complications, true beat and retrograde. The newest additions to the HMS1 collection feature an anthracite, cream or black dial in a classical elegant 18-carat rose gold case, a white or anthracite dial in a stainless steel case, and an 18-carat white gold case featuring a silver colored dial. The case is 40 mm in diameter and houses a manufacture hand-wound movement which is only 2.7 mm thick.

The public awarded 1^st prize to the Arnold & Son HMS Lady in Munich. The award was presented during a glittering ceremony on 11^th December 2012.

The famous watch exhibition MunichTime took place at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich from the 1^st to 3^rd of November, where the watch industry presented its novelties to a large audience of connoisseurs. Thousands of watch lovers visited the exhibition and voted for the “Watch of the Year” in 6 different categories.  Arnold & Son won the 1^st prize in the “Best Luxury Ladies’ Watch” category with the iconic HMS Lady.

The awards were presented during the traditional Watch Gala at the “Aula der Wissenschaften” in Vienna on the 11^th of December 2012. The event was attended by distinguished high profile guests and representatives of the prestigious brands being awarded.

It is truly, truly great to have Arnold & Son back in North America and better than ever!  One of my favorites is the Hornet World Timer.  More than just time, date and second timezone.  This is a TIME MACHINE in the truest sense!
