"I am not a man, I am Cantona"

Okay, this is supposed to be about watches, but really this is a "man-crush/love-letter" to Eric Cantona.

I suspect by now, regular readers of this little "bloggy-wog" have come to realize that for better or worse,  I will from time to time share an unpopular opinion - or at least voice one.  I find a lot of sports figures (both active and retired) to be disappointing, but I will say that if I could invite anyone  to a dinner party, living or dead?  It would be Eric Cantona!
As a (quite) frustrated semi-professional footballer (soccer player) I am often reminded of real genius when I see footage from Mr. Cantona's amazing journey through his career.  There have been some truly great French soccer players - Zinedine Zidane, Jean Tigana, Just Fontaine and of course Michel Platini.  But for me, Eric Cantona embodies something far beyond being a talented footballer.  He is a talented man.  It would be easy for him to say only popular things, to polish apples and kiss asses.  But that is not him.  A man must have a code, and King Eric has lived by his code through thick and thin.  And that is why for me, he will always be the best ever.  You can do a lot with a footballing career - but Mr. Cantona has always been more than just a footballer.

So while the news about a partnership is always exciting, for me the real excitement and pleasure is to know that a luxury brand is willing to partner with a man of ethics, sincerity and principle - who just happens to be one of the greatest footballers ever ; )  So bravo Hautlence!

So of course, I will continue to update you on this partnership, but for now I would like to leave you with some of my favorite "Cantona-isms", enjoy!

"When the seagulls follow the trawler, it's because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea. Thank you very much."

I suppose as someone who is now writing about Mr. Cantona, I am one of the "seagulls" - but fair enough!

"Sac à Merde"

Nobody likes getting substituted ; )

"After his first training session in heaven, George Best, from the favourite right wing, turned the head of God who was filling in at left back."

This was spoken in honor of George Best when he died.  The one thing that I have appreciated about Mr. Cantona - when he gave praise it was sincere, never false.  He further said -

"I would love him to save me a place in his team, George Best that is, not God."

And anyone thinking that now he has left the game he has become a shrinking violet, think again -

It is a beautiful game, but it is a game played by real-live human beings.  And thank heavens for players like Eric Cantona - without them, it would be just a game.
