Roger W Smith - The Sorcerer's Apprentice

There are brands, there are "MEGA BRANDS", groups and conglomerates.  And then there are individuals -

Now perhaps I'm a little over-sensitive.  Perhaps, as much as I love the country and the people, I do not believe unconditionally that if it isn't SWISS it's crap.  Maybe, just maybe there is some really good stuff coming from points west.

And yes, Roger W Smith is making some amazing things.  But it goes just beyond the great watches.  Because Roger W Smith is actually the link.  The link from Dr. George Daniels  to the present, and with luck to the next truly gifted British watchmaker.  And he is more than merely a link, in many ways he has picked up the torch and carried it further.  And ultimately isn't that the idea?

So yes - Geneva, Le Chaux de Fonds... they are important.  But next time you are waxing lyrical about the "cradles of horology", let your imagination take you a bit further than Switzerland.  Travel to an unexpected place, the Isle of Man.  And acquaint yourself with the Sorcerer's Apprentice.
