I can't speak for the rest of you, but there are times when I feel that I was born in the wrong place and time. Today we are in a hurry. Manners, civility and common courtesy seem to be a luxury that many people today feel that can't afford. But there was a time not so long ago when you would hold the door open for someone else. You would say please and thank you. And perhaps most of all, you would try to put yourself together a bit better than simply pulling on one of your several oversize t-shirts, and ball hats.
Thank goodness for Scott Schuman and his fantastic blog -The Sartorialist. Mr. Schuman's blog is a very reassuring presence in our age of instant gratification because it reminds us of the value of being your own person, making your own way - being yourself.
So what I was thinking of today on a gloomy Santa Barbara morning was this - what watch might Cary Grant - or more specifically - John Robie "The Cat" have worn in To Catch a Thief?

This is the GUILLERMIN MOLLET Premiere Edition 2003 Number 34/50 - and I am very proud to say that it is part of my personal collection. 18 carat white gold, alligator strap, self-winding swiss made goodness for the wrist! There is more to come on these fantastic watches - stay tuned! For those of you looking for one - contact me, I will be happy to put you in touch with the owner directly.
I read about these when they were first released 7 years ago - but had never actually held one until the owner of Guillermin Mollet and I met each other at a DOXA event here in town. It is solid - almost heavy. But it is more than that - it didn't feel like a watch I was holding - it felt like I was holding something not just solid, or expensive or exclusive - but something from another time and place. And when I wear it - I feel as if I should have on my suit, with my shoes polished. And I hear it speak to me - telling me to slow down, enjoy the view, offer my chair to someone, smile and say hello, and remember that manners may not be in vogue, but that I don't have to be in vogue either.

Cary Grant as Jacques Robie, the Cat? Something classic, of course. A watch that could tell time discretely yet woo Grace Kelly with it's impeccable taste. I'm partial to the Longines line myself..... any suggestions to fit the bill?
ReplyDeleteI do have a vintage piece that would probably fit the bill - and as it happens it is a Longines - stay tuned
